Environmental Sustainability

The University’s Strategic Plan 2007 – 2012 includes an explicit vision to promote environmentally sustainable ways of working and living and to act in a sustainable and environmentally-enhancing way. Its core values include:
  • Promoting sustainable development and actively engaging with the community
  • Fully accepting our broad responsibilities to society

We also aim to develop the University’s physical assets to provide excellent facilities and opportunities for students, staff and the wider community, but in ways which promote and champion environmental sustainability.

Carbon Management Strategy

In response to recent developments in the Higher Education Sector relating to environmental sustainability and significant achievements in monitoring our environmental performance, the University has adopted an overarching Carbon Management Strategy. This was approved by the Board of Governors on 5 July 2010.

Communication Strategy for Sustainability

To achieve this, a Communications Strategy for Sustainability was ratified by the Environment Committee in September 2009. This has been developed to:

  • Stimulate change in student and staff attitudes towards sustainability
  • Harness the interest of the local community
  • Display the positive impact we are having on the local environment

The Communications Strategy includes an Action Plan which is reviewed and updated on a regular basis by the Sustainability and Development Team.

Worcester is winning recognition as an environmentally-friendly university after successfully achieving the EcoCampus Gold level award in November 2009.
