Lecturer in English Literature (Fixed term contract)

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic lecturer to join the Institute of Humanities to play a key role in the delivery of our popular English Literature courses.

The Institute of Humanities is home to a well-established BA English Literature programme, in which students gain a solid grounding in all major areas of the subject, and have ample opportunity to specialise. English Literature is taught as a Single Hons subject and also in a range of flexible combinations with other subjects such as Creative and Professional Writing, English Language, History, and Media. The Institute also has MA and MRes programmes in literary and cultural studies, and a growing community of PhD students. All curricula are informed by active research, and English Literature staff have strong reputations and publication profiles. The Institute is committed to the employability and personal development of its students.

 

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic lecturer to join the Institute of Humanities to play a key role in the delivery of our popular English Literature courses. The new Lecturer will have an emerging specialism in early modern and/or eighteenth-century literature and also an ability to teach critical theory. S/he will be expected to contribute to BA teaching, playing a significant role in the delivery of modules on the English Literature curriculum. Candidates should be committed to student success and innovation in Learning, Teaching and Assessment, and be reflective practitioners of HE teaching. The successful candidate will deliver English Literature modules at degree level, contribute to the running and development of the programme, have the potential to produce published work suitable for submission to the Research Excellence Framework, and play an active role within the collaborative research and enterprise culture of the Institute.

 

Worcester’s Institute of Humanities encompasses a broad range of disciplines and the successful candidate will play an active role in development of its increasingly interdisciplinary approach.

 

Selection Methods
Short-listed candidates invited to interview will be asked to deliver a 15-minute teaching session (followed by 5 minutes of questions). The teaching session should be pitched at Level 5 (second-year undergraduate). Short-listed candidates will be advised of the topic. The session should clearly illustrate the kind of student-centred activities which would be used to deliver this topic; there should also be a clear indication as to how this session would be introduced and concluded. The session will be delivered to a small panel of academics and/or students. The Chair of this group will provide feedback on the presentation to the interview panel.

The Institute of Humanities has access to a good range of high-quality teaching facilities, which have grown and developed as part of the University’s expansion in recent years. The University’s new library, The Hive, is widely acknowledged to be groundbreaking in its scope and approach, as the first purpose-built joint University / community library in Europe.

 

The new Lecturer will join a creative and vibrant academic community, where research and teaching are fully integrated; staff members in the Institute played a significant role in the University’s REF 2014 submission and have ambitious work in progress for REF 2021. The Institute has a dynamic approach to making regional, national, and international connections in both academic and professional contexts, and this is reflected in the aspirations and approach of the Literature team. Key foci for continuous development within the Institute are: postgraduate course portfolio (with new MRes. programmes now recruiting well); international research achievement and continuing development of research culture; and innovative development of professional / industry engagement and knowledge transfer work.

Main duties

Main duties

1. To lead, teach, and assess English Literature across a wide range modules, specialising mainly in early modern and/or eighteenth-century literature, and in critical theory

 

2. To participate fully in curriculum development work including planning, development, and evaluation of programmes

 

3. To design and develop innovative and inspiring learning materials and assessments, where appropriate

 

4. To act as a Personal Academic Tutor to undergraduate students

 

5. To supervise students undertaking Independent Research Project at level 6

 

6. To assist with marketing and recruitment activities such as open days, widening participation, and outreach activities, as agreed with line manager

 

7. To contribute to the development of work placement opportunities for students and the development of links and professional networks that support student employability

 

8. To carry out academic administrative work and participate in relevant committees within the Institute and University

 

9. To participate in annual staff development and review processes

 

10. To actively engage in scholarship in ways which contribute to the University and Institute objectives and contribute to ensuring up-to-date, leading-edge teaching

 

11. To participate fully in the life of the Institute and University, by engaging in representational and ambassadorial activities in support of the Institute’s activities and carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of Institute or her/his nominee

Essential criteria:

 

1. A good undergraduate degree (2:1 or above) in a relevant discipline

 

2. A higher degree on a literary theme: a completed or near completion PhD

 

3. Experience of effective teaching of early modern and/or eighteenth-century literature and also an ability to teach critical theory at HE level

 

4. Experience of module leadership at HE level

 

5. Ability or potential to undertake dissertation supervision

 

6. An emerging profile of published research suitable for submission to the Research Excellence Framework

 

7. Ability to support the diverse academic and personal needs of individual students

 

8. Excellent organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills and a commitment to teamwork

 

9. The ability to use Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL)

 

10. Professional links and networks able to be deployed to the benefit of English Literature students at Worcester

 

 

 

Desirable criteria:

 

1. Experience of admissions and recruitment in a university context

 

2. Capability to contribute to the development of work placement opportunities for students

 

3. Ability to contribute to curriculum development and planning

 

4. Teaching qualification or HEA Fellowship*

 

* As part of their CPD, early-career academics or those relatively new to HE will have the opportunity to embark on relevant training components of the HEA professional recognition scheme at Worcester and would receive support, developmental teaching observations, and subject-specific mentoring.
