The successful candidate will join a team of enthusiastic, committed and friendly staff within the Biological Sciences team at the Institute of Science and the Environment.
The post holder will also work collaboratively with colleagues across the Institute and the wider University.
The post-holder will deliver core teaching/module leadership on a range of courses within Biological Sciences including: BSc Biomedical Science, Biochemistry and Human Biology programme and contribute to further development of this curriculum. It is expected that the successful applicant will have contemporary knowledge of research in the field of Biological Sciences and specifically in Biochemistry and Biology.
As part of the selection process shortlisted candidates will be required to prepare and deliver a twenty minute teaching session on the following topic:
An aspect of Biochemistry or Human Biology that is appropriate for level 5 undergraduates.
The Chair of the presentation panel will feed back to the interview panel.

The University’s new Riverside Campus includes a 2,000 capacity indoor sports arena, the country’s first specifically created facility to cater for the needs of wheelchair athletes. The Arena hosted the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships in 2015 – the first time a university has acted as host for this major tournament.
In the centre of Worcester, on the site of previously derelict buildings, the University’s City Campus has come to life. The fully restored and modernised historic buildings of the former Worcester Royal Infirmary, high quality student residences, and the immediately adjacent Hive, which contains Britain’s first fully integrated University and Public Library, have created an exciting new cultural and learning quarter in the heart of Worcester. The Hive was a nominated finalist for 46 architectural, environmental, educational and social awards. Amongst the many awards won outright were Best University Contribution to the Local Community (The Guardian) and Best University Library Team (THE). The Institute of Science and the Environment
The University has made significant investment into the Institute over the last five years including the provision of new teaching and research laboratories, a range of new equipment and a number of new academic staff members. Our newest development, a suite of four new biology laboratories plus preparation rooms etc., was opened in September 2015. Undergraduate numbers have increased two-fold during the last five years and the students take courses in Biology, Animal Biology, Human Biology, Biochemistry, Human Nutrition, Plant Science, Forensic and Applied Biology, Environmental courses, Geography, Archaeology & Heritage Studies, and Maths. All these courses are taught entirely at the University’s St John’s campus.
Research and scholarly activity is strongly encouraged within the institute. The Institute incorporates six research groups including a Biomedical Research Group. Collaboration is also possible with staff in other university research centres including the Motion Performance Centre (MPC) and with other colleagues in the Institute of Sport and Exercise Science and in the Institute of Health and Society.
- Main duties
1. To be responsible for the design, content and delivery of appropriate Biological Science modules including Biochemistry/Human Biology/Biomedical Science at all levels of the courses, including practical sessions and assessments.
2. To design and develop innovative and inspiring learning materials and assessments.
3. To embrace and employ a range of teaching strategies (including e-learning, where appropriate), ensuring that students are provided with an excellent learning experience.
4. To participate fully in on going course design and development, including interdisciplinary courses and service led initiatives where appropriate.
5. To engage in the evaluation and development of modules for which the lecturer has responsibility, and to collaborate with colleagues in the continuous review of taught courses
6. To actively engage in scholarship, research and professional / academic publication in ways which contribute to the University’s / Institute’s objectives and contribute to ensuring up-to-date, leading edge teaching.
7. To fulfil a tutorial role, including advice to students on academic and pastoral matters.
8. To assume an appropriate level of responsibility for academic leadership within the Biochemistry and/or Human Biology course.
9. To undertake administrative duties appropriate to a University Lecturer (e.g. join one or more Institute or University committees, participate in the marketing and recruitment of relevant courses at Open Days, etc).

Please provide evidence of how you meet each of the essential criteria.
1. A PhD in Biochemistry/ Human Biology or a related field.
2. A minimum of two years at post-doctoral level
3. An ability to deliver research-led teaching at HE level which demonstrates excellence and innovation, including the ability to enthuse, motivate and facilitate student learning and intellectual challenge, using a variety of methods of learning and teaching, including e-learning.
4. A knowledge base that allows the delivery and development of teaching in Biochemistry, Human Biology and Biomedical Science.
5. Post-doctoral experience in Biochemistry/ Human Biology or a related subject.
6. Clear evidence of research related to one of the research groups in the Institute of Science and the Environment (ISE) with experience of human cell culture, flow cytometry, ELISA and Western blots.
7. Evidence of cross/multi-discipline research and publication
8. Competence in the use of ICT for teaching and administrative purposes.
9. Ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a wide range of people, both orally and in writing.
10. Experience of working on own initiative and also as part of a team.
1. *Membership of the Higher Education Academy as a fellow or completion of a Post graduate diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (or equivalent) course.
2. Experience of conference presentation and national or international venues.
3. Experience of course planning/administration such as module leadership
4. Experience with schools’ liaison and/or student recruitment
5. Peer reviewed publications in an area of redox biology.
*Newly appointed staff who do not already hold HEA professional recognition or a HE teaching qualification, will be required to achieve this within three years of their appointment to the post, either through completion of the PG Cert Learning and Teaching in HE, or for those with significant experience of teaching in HE, via the University’s accredited CPD scheme conferring Fellowship at the appropriate level.
