MS SQL Server Database Administrator/Developer

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) team comprises the Corporate Information Systems, IT Service Support, IT Service Management, Network, and Systems teams.

This role sits within the Corporate Information Systems team who provide services to staff and students across the University sites. This team is responsible for data integration, development and technical application support. The team are currently working on centralising the University data integration across systems and reviewing approaches and this post will assist with this.

The primary responsibility of this role will be to work in collaboration with key departments such as Registry Services, Facilities, Finance and Human Resources in order to maintain, develop and integrate various information systems critical to the University's business processes. This work will utilise the post holder's MS SQL skills to provide database support and integration processes between these systems. The role will also include the development of new databases to support development of web based applications as well as some technical application support for the University business and service critical systems. The University uses market-leading software and regularly has new acquisitions to deploy and implement.

The role will offer training for Microsoft SQL Server, which could lead to Microsoft Certification for the successful candidate. This will include: MS SQL Server Administration, MS SQL Server Querying and Programming, MS SQL Server Integration Services. There will be many opportunities to put your learning into practice.

Main duties

1 To undertake responsibility (alongside a similar post) for the integration work between business critical information systems including timetabling, financial services, student record systems, HR, facilities management and others to ensure accuracy and consistency of data across systems.

2 To proactively maintain, upgrade and monitor the University’s MS SQL Server databases.

3 To monitor the performance of MS SQL databases to be proactive is assessing potential issues.

4 To provide creative advice and planning on technological solutions for data management.

5 To undertake responsibility for the implementation and subsequent support of specific projects with respect to MS SQL databases.

6 To be involved in the design, implementation and maintenance of a centralised system for data integration across University systems.

7 To be involved in all aspects of database technical developments, administration and maintenance of ICT supported information systems working as a member of the Corporate Information Systems team.

8 To provide technical support for business and service critical applications.

9 To document all key ICT information and project work to a high level of accuracy for compliance with ICT standards.

10 To occasionally work weekends, evenings and early mornings in order to carry out installations, maintenance and other systems related duties and provide out of hours support for key events.

11 To assist more generally in providing support to students and staff users in respect of their problems and queries in using University systems supported by the ICT team.

12 To investigate, evaluate and implement new technologies in order to further advance ICT services for both students and staff.

13 To complete any other appropriate duties as specified by the Manager for Corporate Information Systems.

Essential Criteria

Personal:

1 Ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a wide range of people both orally and in writing. Ability to communicate complex or detailed technical information clearly and accurately in the most appropriate format to individuals or groups who may have varying levels of technical knowledge.

2 Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other members of staff across teams and with external organisations.

3 Excellent organisational skills including the ability to manage own workload, prioritise effectively and work to deadlines.

4 Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to quality control.

5 A creative approach to problem solving and a flexible approach for dealing with varied tasks

6 Be able to work effectively as part of a team.

Technical:

1. Higher qualification (e.g. MSc, BSc, HND) in IT, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent minimum 2 years work experience that demonstrates a high level of technical understanding and implementation skills.

2. Knowledge of MS SQL Server skills including SQL, stored procedures and SQL Agent jobs.

3. Interest in data integration between disparate information systems and how this helps to improve business processes.

4. The ability to plan and carry out upgrades to MS SQL working with a Corporate Information Systems colleague, application suppliers and University Service departments.

5. Knowledge of relational database design

6 Experience of recent development activities and keen to expand knowledge in this area.

Desirable Criteria

1 Knowledge of some of the following: SSRS, SSIS, SSAS.

2 Working knowledge of PowerShell.
