Residential Ambassadors - open to current University of Worcester students only

The University has approximately 1500 students in University owned or managed Halls of Residence/accommodation and the aim of this post is to act as peer support for these residents.

The University has approximately 1500 students in University owned or managed Halls of Residence/accommodation and the aim of this post is to act as peer support for these residents. The overall aim of the position is to assist with induction, transition and retention of students within Halls. We anticipate a structured and regular input of time throughout the year.

This is an excellent Earn as you Learn opportunity for students who will significantly enhance their CV throughout the year in post. The position requires an individual who is flexible, committed and able to assume a variety of roles as dictated by the changing needs of students. It is crucial that an individual is able to relate well to others and handle administrative responsibilities.

All successful applicants are required to attend all training sessions (7-10th August 2017) and will be required to live in University managed accommodation for the fulfillment of their duties for which rent will be payable.

The Residential Ambassador is more than just a friendly presence; she/he is the crucial link in creating an environment in which students develop independence, learn to live cooperatively with others and provide a link between the Assistant Director - Hospitality Services and residents and can be expected to perform a range of duties related to this function.

Main duties

Main duties

1. To develop a sense of community within University Managed Accommodation. Ensuring that new residents form good social bonds, are socially responsible and interact well between each other.

2. To participate and play an active role in the welcoming and induction of new residents. This will include a warm welcome event, regular welfare checks and the identification of potential welfare issues.

3. To ensure that we particularly focus on welcoming early arrivals into halls; nursing students, education students, international arrivals, etc., ensuring that they receive the same warm welcome that we offer on our main arrivals weekend.

4. To assist with the preparation of halls at the beginning of the academic year; ensuring that all aspects of the room and flat are ready and of an acceptable standard for arrivals and be prepared to assist with administrative duties as required.

5. To provide support to the University Community Development workers (UCDWs), including the promotion of campaigns.

6. To take a lead role in the promotion of University Accommodation at Open Events, including the use of your room / flat as a ‘Show flat.’

7. To provide a signposting service for University support services via the University’s firstpoint facility.

8. To take part in a regular drop-in rota for students who wish to discuss accommodation issues informally and attend regular ambassador meetings (to be held fortnightly). These two elements will form essential regular contact points with the Residential Services Team, Firstpoint Staff and University PCSO’s.

9. To offer advice to students in relation to their licence agreement and any conditions therein which may be relevant in relation to Health & Safety, room inspections or move out.

10. To be prepared to assist in the event of any incident affecting students.

11. To work in partnership with the Facilities team, including Security, Cleaning, Campus Services and Estates.

12. To assist with the students departing accommodation, including Easter, Christmas Breaks as well as the main move out weekend.

13. To be knowledgeable and promote awareness of Sustainability in Halls. As well as general awareness of issues such as recycling and energy conservation you will also promote specific campaigns throughout the year - for example, the ‘Student Switch off Campaign'.

14. To assist, promote and offer advice during Housing week.

15. To participate in a full training week in relation to the post.

1. A full time student at the University of Worcester (not in their first year).

2. Ability to commit to living in their student accommodation for at least 42 weeks in the academic year (please note the postholder will be responsible for paying for their own rent).

3. Ability to attend training.

4. Ability to communicate well with peers.

5. A positive outgoing approach.

6. A flexible approach and ability to work as part of a team.

7. Excellent organisation and time management skills.

8. Experience of, or a visible interest in student wellbeing / welfare.

9. Ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a wide range of people both orally and in writing.

10. Good ICT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Desirable Criteria:

1. Knowledge of the UUK housing code.
