Sessional Lecturer in Applied Statistics

The University of Worcester is seeking to appoint sessional lecturers to provide teaching and learning support in applied statistics.

You would be joining a small team of staff who deliver teaching on a joint honours mathematics undergraduate degree course and provide mathematical and statistical support to students and colleagues in a range of disciplines across the university. 

The joint honours degrees in mathematics include Biology and Mathematics, Computing and Mathematics, Education Studies and Mathematics, Geography and Mathematics, Physical Education and Mathematics, and Psychology and Mathematics. The mathematics and statistics components of these courses have been designed to provide a practice-based course with a focus on solving real problems and analysing real data sets. However, the course also provides a sound theoretical foundation in core areas of mathematics and statistics as well as developing knowledge in more advanced topics. Extensive use is made of mathematics and statistics software including Matlab, Python, R and SPSS.

Applications are particularly encouraged from those with experience of: 

• Teaching of applied statistics to level 5 and 6 students; 

• Statistical modelling including multiple regression, linear models, generalised linear models, ANOVA, and non-parametric methods; 

• Multivariate data analysis including visualisation of multivariate data, principal components analysis, factor analysis, cluster analysis, and multidimensional scaling; 

• Use of R, SPSS, or similar software packages; 

• Teaching both theoretical and practical aspects of mathematics or statistics, including teaching through problem solving; 

• Providing statistical support to students and colleagues across a range of academic disciplines. 

NB. If you are successful at interview you will be invited to join a pool of sessional lecturers and we will contact you if suitable work becomes available. Selection Process: 

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to give a 15 minute presentation to a small panel, on part of a topic in applied statistics that would be appropriate for a class of Year 2 or Year 3 undergraduate mathematics students.

Main duties

Main duties

The precise duties will depend on the nature of the work required which may include teaching all or part of a module, providing in-class learning support for other lecturers, providing one-to-one learning support to students outside of class and/or marking of student work. This may require you to do one or more of the following: 

1. Prepare for teaching by developing an understanding of the content, learning outcomes and modes of delivery for the relevant sessions. This may involve research and reading in the subject area and/or adapting existing learning materials. 

2. Prepare course materials, including setting assignments, producing reading lists, and module outlines and learning materials, and ensuring that information is available to students in advance of the course and taught sessions. 

3. Teach sessions by lectures, tutorials, seminars and any other relevant form of learning method. 

4. Provide learning support to the module tutor in class. 

5. Provide one-to-one learning support outside of classes. 

6. Undertake marking, and other forms of assessment; ensure work is moderated and grades submitted, and provide assignments for reassessment. This may include the supervision and assessment of final year mathematics or statistics projects. 

7. Ensure regular contact with the relevant Module/Course Leader to keep them informed of progress through the semester. 

8. Undertake other administrative duties related to the teaching.

Please provide evidence of how you meet each of the essential criteria.

Essential Criteria: 

1. An honours degree or equivalent in Mathematics or Statistics or a related subject. 

2. Experience of teaching within Higher Education, or experience of teaching mathematics at A Level or equivalent, or other training at a similar level. 

3. The ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a wide range of people, both orally and in writing. 

4. The ability to work well in a team context when required. 

5. Ability to relate to students with diverse backgrounds, ages and experience. 

Desirable Criteria: 

1. Experience in the use of mathematical or statistical software. 

2. A higher degree (or near to completion) in a related area. 

3. Experience of e-learning using a Virtual Learning Environment. 

4. Have or working towards an appropriate teaching qualification. 

5. Evidence of providing statistical and mathematical support across a range of academic disciplines.
