Sessional Lecturer in Biomedical Science

The University of Worcester currently runs a Biomedical Science BSc course and is seeking to attract sessional lecturers to provide teaching and/or learning support in this subject.

We are particularly keen to attract sessional lecturers with practitioner experience in the biomedical sciences.

The successful candidate/s will join a team of enthusiastic, committed and friendly staff within the Biological Sciences team at the Institute of Science and the Environment; the post holder may also work collaboratively with colleagues across the Institute and the wider University. 

The post-holder will deliver core teaching/module leadership on the BSc Biomedical Science programme and will have the opportunity to contribute to further development of this curriculum. The appointed applicant will be required to work alongside other colleagues involved in the delivery of this programme. 

This post would suit a biomedical scientist who is currently working in a laboratory setting in a private laboratory setting or NHS Trust. 

Selection Process:

As part of the selection process shortlisted candidates will be required to prepare and deliver a fifteen minute teaching session on the following topic: 

An aspect of Biomedical Science that is appropriate for level 5 (year 2) undergraduates. 

This will be followed by 5 minutes of questions related to the teaching session. 

NB. If you are successful at interview you will be invited to join a pool of sessional lecturers and we will contact you if suitable work becomes available. We are not able to guarantee employment as it will be subject to student numbers. The number of hours available might only be a few hours per week. Main duties

Main duties

1. To prepare for teaching by developing an understanding of the content, learning outcomes and modes of delivery for the relevant sessions. This may involve research and reading in the subject area and/or adapting existing learning materials or developing new ones.

2. To prepare course materials, including setting assignments, producing reading lists, and module outlines and learning materials, and ensuring that information is available to students in advance of the course and taught sessions.

3. To teach sessions by lectures, tutorials, seminars and any other relevant form of learning method, including laboratory practical work..

4. To provide one-to-one learning support outside of classes.

5. To undertake marking, and other forms of assessment; ensure work is moderated and grades submitted, and provide assignments for reassessment. This may include the supervision and assessment of final year projects.

6. To ensure regular contact with the relevant Module/Course Leader to keep them informed of progress through the semester.

7. To undertake other administrative duties related to teaching and assessment.

*Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.

*Take steps to ensure and enhance personal health, safety and well being and that of other staff and students.

*Carry out these duties in a manner that promotes equality of opportunity and supports diversity and inclusion, and takes into account the University's commitment to environmentally sustainable ways of working.

Please provide evidence of how you meet each of the essential criteria.
Essential Criteria

1. An honours degree or equivalent in Biomedical Science or a related field.

2. Biomedical Science practitioner experience in the UK and registration on the appropriate part of the HCPC registration.

3. Contemporary knowledge of the context of biomedical science in relation to practice within and outside the statutory services e.g. NHS Trusts.

4. Evidence of teaching experience at HE level or equivalent that demonstrates excellence and innovation.

5. Ability to liaise effectively with colleagues, members of local NHS Trusts, industry etc.

6. Competence in the use of ICT for teaching and administrative purposes.

7. Ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a wide range of people, both orally and in writing.

8. Experience of working on own initiative and also as part of a team.

Desirable Criteria 

1. Higher degree completed or nearing completion.

2. Have or working towards an appropriate teaching qualification.

3. Experience of e-learning using a Virtual Learning Environment.

4. Evidence of relevant research and/or scholarly activity consistent with career stage.
