Sessional Lecturer - PGCE Secondary Physical Education

We are looking to appoint outstanding colleagues who have enthusiasm and commitment to work within an already high performing team.

The Centre for Secondary and Post Compulsory Education offers a range of accredited programmes. Teacher Training is a focus of much of our work. We have a portfolio of fourteen subjects within the popular PGCE programme. The routes we offer include our core PGCE route and the School Direct route. We are a large provider and target numbers for the programme average around 270.

Please note that this is sessional work, usually in term time, during the day and contracts will be raised as and when work is required. 

It is expected that the hours will be between 10-15 hours per week, although these cannot be guaranteed. 

NB. If you are successful at interview you will be invited to join a pool of sessional lecturers and we will contact you if suitable work becomes available. We are not able to guarantee employment as it will be subject to student numbers. The number of hours available might only be a few hours per week. The main duties are outlined below; however individual roles will vary according to the subject/programme taught and module/course requirements. This is a generic job description only, a more detailed job description may be provided for specific roles. 

Selection process: 

Short-listed candidates will be required, as part of the selection process, to give a ten-minute presentation to the interview panel on the following topic: 

“In school, trainee teachers need to develop in terms of the Teachers’ Standards. Choose one of the standards listed below, and explain what advice you might offer trainees and their mentors in terms of enhancing their practice and understanding.” 

Teachers’ Standards: 

• Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge
• Make use of formative and summative assessment to secure pupils’ progress.
• Be aware of pupils’ capabilities and their prior knowledge, and plan teaching to build on this. 

Following this presentation 5 minutes has been allocated for questions.

Main duties

With support from the course/subject leader you will have responsibility: 

1. To undertake observations of teaching against the required Teachers’ Standards and providing appropriate critical and constructive oral and written feedback to and the setting of agreed targets for trainee teachers, including active involvement of their school based mentors in the process. 

2. To undertake teaching in your specialist subject. 

3. To ensure appropriate academic and professional knowledge and understanding of course materials, assessment and assignments, recommended reading, course outlines and handouts. 

4. To lead/organize tutorials, and/or seminars as required by the module/course. 

5. To undertake related duties associated with teaching such as marking and other forms of assessment, providing feedback to trainee teachers, reporting and recording marks as required by the module or course and contributing to UW formal assessment processes. 

6. To maintain good lines of communications with other members of the teaching team, module/course leader, mentors and trainee teachers themselves, as appropriate. 

7. To contribute to the excellent profile and reputation of the course by being an active and committed team member; by demonstrating and modelling high levels of professional engagement; and maintaining and developing further the very high expectations we have of staff members and trainees on our professional programmes. 

8. To provide excellent academic support for all trainee teachers and members of the University and ensuring they achieve their potential. 

*Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training. 

*Take steps to ensure and enhance personal health, safety and well being and that of other staff and students.

Please provide evidence of how you meet each of the essential criteria.

Essential Criteria: 

1. A first degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area. 

2. UK Qualified Teacher Status. 

3. Relevant, recent and successful experience of teaching your specialist subject in a secondary school. 

4. Some understanding and experience of Initial Teacher Training requirements and processes, including teaching observation and effective feedback skills. 

5. A commitment to providing high quality learning opportunities for trainee teachers focusing on interactive teaching methods with a learner centered focus. 

6. The ability to work well in a team or independently as required. 

7. Flexibility and the ability to travel to schools across the wide geographical area covered by the IoE. 

Desirable Criteria: 

1. Masters level qualification (or in progress). 

2. Some experience of teaching adults, preferably in a HE context. 

3. Experience of undertaking research and evidence of publications or professional dissemination of knowledge, for example, conference presentations. 

4. Expertise in working in ITE and implementing its requirements in England.
