Sessional Lecturers - Human Geography

The University of Worcester is seeking to appoint sessional lecturers in both Human Geography.

The successful candidate will join a team of Geography staff who deliver teaching on our popular courses in BSc Geography and BA Human Geography

Applications are particularly encouraged from those with expertise in

• Rural Geography

• Social Geography

• Cultural Geography 

Selection Process:
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to give a 10 minute presentation to a small panel on their research interests (which should be in one of the themes identified above). The presentation should be pitched at a level that could be understood by a class of Year 1 Geography students     

If you are successful, at interview you will be invited to join a pool of sessional lecturers and we will contact you if suitable work becomes available. We are not able to guarantee employment as it will be subject to student numbers. The number of hours available might only be a few hours per week. Main duties

Main duties

The precise duties will depend on the nature of the work required which may include teaching all or part of a module, providing in-class learning support for other lecturers, providing one-to-one learning support to students outside of class and/or marking of student work. This may require you to do one or more of the following:

1. To prepare for teaching by developing an understanding of the content, learning outcomes and modes of delivery for the relevant sessions. This may involve research and reading in the subject area and/or adapting existing learning materials. 

2. To prepare course materials, including setting assignments, producing reading lists, and module outlines and learning materials, and ensuring that information is available to students in advance of the course and taught sessions. 

3. To teach sessions by lectures, tutorials, seminars and any other relevant form of learning method. 

4. To provide learning support to the module tutor in class. 

5. To provide one-to-one learning support outside of classes. 

6. To undertake marking, and other forms of assessment; ensure work is moderated and grades submitted, and provide assignments for reassessment. This may include the supervision and assessment of final year human geography projects. 

7. To ensure regular contact with the relevant Module/Course Leader to keep them informed of progress through the semester. 

8. To undertake other administrative duties related to the teaching. 

*Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training. 

*Take steps to ensure and enhance personal health, safety and well being and that of other staff and students.

Please provide evidence of how you meet each of the essential criteria.

Essential Criteria

1. An honours degree or equivalent Geography or another relevant field. 

2. Experience of teaching within Higher Education, or clear evidence of an ability to teach excellently at this level on campus and in the field. 

3. The ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a wide range of people, both orally and in writing. 

4. The ability to work well in a team context when required. 

5. Ability to relate to students with diverse backgrounds, ages and experience. 

Desirable Criteria

1. A higher degree (or near to completion) in a related area. 

2. Experience of course planning and administration 

3. Experience of e-learning using a Virtual Learning Environment. 

4. Have or working towards an appropriate teaching qualification.
