Vacation Teaching Development Assistantship - Integration of Technology Enhanced Content on Research Methods and Evidence Based Practice - Open to University of Worcester students only (see * below for specific eligibility criteria)

The Research Methods Project Vacation Teaching Development Assistant (VTDA) will be expected collect and assess the range of research methods materials available across AHASS.

Open to University of Worcester Students only - eligible students are:

• students completing the penultimate or final year of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree (or equivalent) at the University of Worcester or partner institutions


• students completing, or who have completed, an undergraduate degree at another university (with 1st or 2:1 predicted/achieved) who are about to commence postgraduate studies at the University of Worcester.

The successful applicant will be expected to have a high level of IT skills and an understanding of the curriculum requirements for learning research methods in a healthcare setting. The individual will need to be able to work with academic staff of all levels and also to pursue the project aims independently. A percentage of the work can be completed off site, but regular meetings with academic staff within the University will be required.

Aim of project:

To improve access to evidence based and research teaching materials, by the development and extension of existing teaching materials across the Allied Health and Social Sciences (AHASS) department of the Institute of Health and Society.


Within AHASS all undergraduate and postgraduate degrees include teaching on research methods and evidence based studies. Each programme has developed specific content and delivery strategies to improve students understanding and skills in using, critiquing and designing research to support the evidence base for their professional practice. Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is accessible to some students within individual modules and therefore not shared between students on different degree programmes. It would benefit students if all module information related to research methods and evidenced based studies could be collected together, collated and made available for all students to study online. 

By bringing all existing materials together it would allow this topic to be taught consistently across AHASS and will enable the various Module staff to both maximise the use of these teaching materials and promote inter-professional learning.

A percentage of the work can be completed off site, but regular meetings with academic staff within the University will be required.

Selection Methods:

Student applications will be considered by a Panel consisting of the project supervisor and one other member of staff trained in interviewing processes. The Panel will draw up a shortlist and a selection process will be undertaken.

The VTDA Scheme is modelled on the highly successful Vacation Research Assistantship Scheme, and will provide students or recent graduates with experience of collaborating on an educational development project over the summer vacation, enabling them to gain valuable work experience and contribute to the development of teaching and learning materials. The scheme will provide UW staff with support in developing or re-developing learning materials relating to a module or part of a course, with a particular focus on embedding learning technologies to establish a ‘blended’ learning approach.

Students appointed to an Assistantship can be expected to engage with a variety of tasks, which may include web-based research, design and development/adaptation of materials and resources, piloting and testing of materials, using technologies, administrative support including data collation and presentation, editing, proof-reading, interviewing etc.

On completion of the project, the supervisor and student must complete a report providing the following information:

• objectives set and met 

• methods and approaches to development work employed

• outputs

• benefits to the student including training undertaken, skills developed, etc.

• potential impact on student learning experience.

2. To work with academic staff of all levels and also to pursue the project aims independently.

3. To develop a single accessible site for the resources already available.

4. To develop and create a range of accessible and student centred materials to complete the provision. This is likely to include; guides for specific readings in relation to research methods, links to existing U-tube or similar videos, on-line activities that will promote learning (e.g. quizzes and research critique examples).

*Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.

*Take steps to ensure and enhance personal health, safety and well being and that of other staff and students.

Essential Criteria

1. Must be a student who has successfully completed minimum level 5 studies including a research methods module. Applicants may be enrolled in either Undergraduate (level 5 or 6) or post graduate course, (level 7), at University of Worcester or a partner college.

2. Applicants will need evidence of good IT knowledge and skills in using a range of IT platforms.

3. Applicants must be independent workers able to plan, organise a complex project.

4. Have a good understanding of the research process and critical analysis.

5. Demonstrate ability to prioritise actions and manage time effectively.

6. Have commitment to high quality research with demonstrable evidence of academic excellence in a relevant aspect of their studies.

7. Good interpersonal skills, with an ability to communicate confidently and clearly to a wide range of people, both orally and in writing.

8. Be able to liaise successfully with several healthcare professionals

Desirable Criteria

1. Level 6 independent study in an area cognate with Allied Health and Social Sciences, Psychology or computer science.

2. Good literacy skills.

3. Demonstrated ability to write at Masters level.

4. Experience of different types of quantitative or qualitative research.
