With significant industry experience in some of the following: production, script editing or script development across television, film, radio, and/or multiplatform outputs such as games and web fiction.
Additional experience in writing for theatre and performance would be particularly welcome. Candidates will have extensive experience of teaching, student pastoral care and course development in Higher Education, ideally at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They will also be able to introduce additional high quality industry links and networks to this well-respected course, in order to embed students’ employability skills, aspirations and professional development.
We are looking for candidates who can extend the Department’s work and contribute to the Institute’s commitment to collaborative working including cross-institute collaborations and ‘real impact’ projects in for example, one or more of the following areas: mental health; science & environment; education & writing for children and young people.

Screenwriting is a very successful and rapidly developing area of practice and academic provision. It is located within the Institute of Creative Arts in the Department of Theatre & Film.
The institute offers an extensive portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate courses that also includes; Film Production, Journalism, Film Studies, Animation, Game Art, Drama & Performance, Touring Theatre, Illustration, Fine Art, Graphic Design and Creative Media. Current screenwriting provision not only offers specialist modules but also draws on appropriate modules from related areas such as playwriting and writing for performance.
Recruitment to all of the Department’s courses has risen significantly over the past three years but there has been particular growth in Screenwriting as joint with either, Creative and Professional Writing; Film Production; Drama & Performance or Film Studies.
There are a number of post-graduate students within the Institute, a research culture and the potential for cross-disciplinary exchange. The institute has a dynamic and ambitious approach to making regional, national and international connections in both academic and professional contexts.
Key focus for development over the next few years include the further development of undergraduate and postgraduate taught course provision with a view to enhancing the excellent teaching and learning experience; continued development of the institute’s research and knowledge transfer culture through staff and student engagement; continued development of professional/industry and community engagement.
There is a rapidly developing culture of screenings and thriving, multiple links with the professional cultural industries via both the Screenwriting and Film Production courses. We present the annual Steven Knight Award for the Best Screenplay and the institute believes the conditions now exist to support a further step change in its activity and aspirations. It is anticipated that the post-holder will make a distinctive contribution by capitalizing on the existence of both practice-based and academic modes of enquiry offered by extant courses, and by drawing on the Institute’s broader portfolio.

- Main duties
1. To deliver high quality and inspirational undergraduate teaching in Screenwriting.
2. To contribute to curriculum and other developments in Screenwriting and in the broader area of Film and Theatre, designed to grow the national reputation and standing of the course and support student recruitment.
3. To carry out research and/or knowledge transfer activity in Screenwriting and, as appropriate, across programmes within the Institute, resulting in dissemination/publication of outputs (including through professional practice) of national/international peer standing.
4. To Teach and leader of generic mandatory modules, including supervision of independent studies.
5. To carry out administrative duties for the Department and Institute, as required by the line manager, including attendance at Subject, Department, Institute and University committees and meetings.
6. To contribute, as appropriate, to commercial, community, short course and professional development initiatives and projects in the subject.
7. To participate in learning and teaching developments and income-generating activities as appropriate and agreed by the line manager.
8. To carry out all activities associated with an academic post, including preparation of teaching and support materials, student tutorials, marking, attendance at committees and meetings, staff development, open days and schools visits, international activities, widening participation and outreach activities, and day and summer schools, as appropriate and agreed with the line manager.

1. A first degree or equivalent and a postgraduate qualification in Screenwriting or a closely related subject and/or industry experience.
2. Experience of teaching Screenwriting at HE level and in a university, and the ability to teach enthusiastically across a range of related curriculum areas.
3. Significant industry experience in production, script editing or script development.
4. Experience of HE curriculum and course development.
5. Current knowledge and experience of innovative learning, teaching and assessment methods in HE, including e-learning.
6. A developing research profile and emerging track record of national and / or international peer esteemed research outputs and/or an outstanding record of professional practice and clear evidence of scholarly engagement.
7. The potential to generate successful external research funding bids and/or bids to enable professional development/projects, and good industry experience/links.
8. Emerging leadership skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
9. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
10. Ability to use information/communication technology to support administration and teaching.
