University Tutor/ Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer Clinical Education (Physician Associate)

The successful candidate will join a team of enthusiastic, committed and friendly staff within the MSc Physician Associate programme at the Institute of Health and Society.

The post holder will also work collaboratively with colleagues across the Institute and wider University.

The post-holder will deliver core teaching/module leadership on the MSc Physician Associate (PA) programme and contribute to further development of the curriculum. The PA programme will require either a practicing Physician Associate, Medical practitioner or other suitably qualified equivalent with knowledge and skills in this area and of the UK curriculum. The appointed applicants will be required to work alongside other colleagues involved in the delivery of this programme. The post holder will also be required to contribute to a wide range of Continuing Professional Development / Learning beyond Registration opportunities, from Study Days to Full Honours and Masters Degrees. This post will contribute to the development of new ways of working, bringing care closer to the community and contributing to educational solutions for the Emergency Care Crisis.

The Institute of Health and Society comprises four academic departments:
• Allied Health
• Applied Social Science
• Psychology
• Nursing and Midwifery
Staff are primarily located in one academic department but contribute to course delivery across the Institute in respect of their expertise.

Selection process:

Candidates invited to interview will be asked to deliver a 15 minute micro teaching session. The topic is “Developing clinical reasoning skills for Physician Associate students.”
This will be followed by 5 minutes of questions relating to the teaching session and an interview of approximately 30 minutes duration.

Main duties

Main duties

1. To undertake teaching at post-graduate level on modules that lead to qualification as a ‘Physician Associate’.

2. To contribute to the assessment process for students including the setting, marking and moderation of student work, individually or collectively as part of a module team in accordance with quality assurance procedures (including PSRB standards).

3. To design and develop innovative and inspiring learning materials and assessments.

4. To participate fully in on going course design and development, including interdisciplinary courses and service led initiatives.

5. To facilitate effective partnerships with local Trusts and other health and care providers.

6. To actively engage in scholarship, research and professional / academic publication in ways which contribute to the University’s / Institute’s objectives and contribute to ensuring up-to-date, leading edge teaching.

7. To undertake tutorial responsibilities, including maintaining records, for a group and/or individual students as required in order to support students to:

a. optimise their learning opportunities and career progression,

b. monitor their progress, deal with difficulties and enable them to develop the skills to do this for themselves.

8. To act as module leader / course leader as required, including ensuring quality assurance and enhancement process (internal and PSRB) are robustly applied.

9. To participate fully in the life of the Institute and University, and carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of Department.

Essential Criteria

1. Evidence of teaching experience at HE level (which maybe in a clinical environment) that demonstrates excellence and innovation, including the ability to enthuse, motivate and facilitate student learning and intellectual challenge, using a variety of methods of learning and teaching, including blended learning.

2. Experience and expertise in the Physician Associate or other healthcare profession to include the skills of health assessment, prescribing options, managing long term conditions; healthcare leadership and managing organisational change.

3. Contemporary knowledge of the context of health and care services and understanding of the new education requirements of the NHS and other providers.

4. Master’s Degree or Post graduate Diploma in a Healthcare related subject

5. Practicing Physician Associate or Clinician with 2- 5 years clinical and academic experience.

6. Ability to undertake quality research.

7. Evidence of publication and/or scholarly activity consistent with career stage.

8. Ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a wide range of people, both orally and in writing.

9. Effective team-working and inter-personal skills.

10. Evidence of on-going CPD. 

Desirable Criteria

1. Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education.

2. PhD or other doctoral qualification.

3. Teaching qualification or HEA Fellowship*

*Newly appointed staff who do not already hold HEA professional recognition or a HE teaching qualification, will be required to achieve this as a condition of probation, either through completion of the PG Cert Learning and Teaching in HE, or for those with significant experience of teaching in HE, via the University’s accredited CPD scheme conferring Fellowship at the appropriate level.
