Green Impact Project

Green Impact empowers individuals and departments to reduce their sustainability impacts by encouraging, rewarding, and celebrating sustainability improvements.

Green Impact is a change and engagement programme that aims to help staff to understand sustainability and social responsibility and give them ideas of what they can do to make a difference, as well as supporting them in achieving these actions.  Students are employed to help to co-create and run projects throughout the year as Green Impact Project Assistants and Digital Creatives. For example, in getting involved with the initiative of how to be hedgehog friendly   

It also gives staff & students an opportunity to showcase their work at a national level.  Read here about how one GI Team won a national sustainability award recognising its work to educate staff, students and the wider community about the climate emergency.

Your Teams can get help with their sustainability projects from a paid student and they can assist in coming up with ideas for suitable projects and delivering them for your department.

The Green Impact Award Ceremony is part of the annual Sustainability Celebration event held in July each year where the winners are announced.

Green Impact Awards 2024

The Green Impact Awards bring together students and staff in green campuses, curriculums and communities.

Many congratulations and thank you to everyone who has supported sustainability at the University of Worcester this year! 

In June, Professor John-Paul Wilson, PVC Research, officiated over our Annual Sustainability Celebration Awards Ceremony where we distributed 20 different sustainability awards under our Green Impact programme. These are the winners:

Special Awards

Sustainability Hero: Mac Weekley (Sustainability Hub),  Catarina Da Silva (City Campus Gardening)

Innovation for Engagement: Anisha Chopra, James Martin (Sustainability Podcast)

Environmental Improvement Award: Ben Bridge (Disposable Glove Review)

Community Action Award: James Martin & Billy Stirling (Lakeside Campus Nature Trail Team)

All winners will be entered into SOS-UK’s National Special Awards which are announced later in the year.

Worcester Business School - Integrating SDGs into Postgraduate Dissertations - Develop a set of tools or resources to help guide WBS Post-Graduate students to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their dissertations.

Gold Award

Wildlife on Wednesday – School of Education - Nature walks and lunchtime nature connectedness activities connected to the University Mile and nature trail

Sustainability Student Network – Students’ Union - Arranging meetings and a support network for students

Disposable Glove Review – School of Science & Environment Labs - Research into perceptions, attitudes and use of disposal gloves, particularly in practicals

Lakeside Campus Nature Trail – Lakeside Campus - Create an engaging outdoor nature trail experience for students, schools, and members of the public to enjoy

Sustainability Podcast – VC's Office - New podcast series exploring topics such as fast fashion and food waste

Student Sustainability Hub – Sustainability Department - provide services and equipment to encourage students to engage with sustainable practices and create a space to practice mindfulness and to run workshops

Planetary Health Report Card – Three Counties Medical School - A metric-based tool for evaluating and improving planetary health content in health professional schools.

Sustainability Treasure Hunt - Worcester Business School - design an engaging, fun, and interactive learning experience, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application

Silver Award

Biodiversity Mapping - School of Science & Environment - Gather information about plants on campus and create an interactive map that can be used by university staff, such as the facilities department or sustainability, and assist in the new biodiversity strategy

City Campus Garden - Worcester Business School - Increase the environmental and social value of the outside spaces at City Campus by create numerous gardening spaces around campus to offer a space to decompress and improve the conduciveness of existing open spaces for birds/insects and maybe animals

Sustainability Game Package - Worcester Business School - Creating a package of sustainability games that can be shared across WBS to equip staff with teaching resources

Sustainability Game Update - Worcester Business School - Redeveloping an existing sustainability game

Sustainable Kitchen Food Project – School of Science & Environment- Investigating attitudes towards sustainable food and food waste

Medical School Gardening - Three Counties Medical School - Encourage more gardening in the medical school to promote better health and sustainability.
