Programme Structure

Stage 1 - Masters level work

It is expected that the Professional Doctorate programmes at Worcester will primarily recruit active, experienced professionals who have already recently been awarded a relevant Masters qualification and who are now seeking to further enhance their professional development. If this applies to you then you will enter the programme at Stage 2, once you have demonstrated that you also have 3 years’ relevant professional engagement.

Stage 2 – The Taught Programme

The taught element of the programme is common across our three Professional Doctorate Programmes giving students the opportunity to work alongside others with contrasting professional backgrounds. Being taught together at various points is intended to facilitate inter-professional insight, thus enriching the learning experience. Together, the professional doctorate taught group, in any given year of intake, will form a ‘community of practice’ working on personally relevant research questions with joint endeavour. Although, where appropriate, teaching will be shared, at times participants will break off into their own programme group. The taught programme will normally be completed within the first 16 months of Registration. Details about the taught modules can be found here. Students who successfully complete Stage 2 of the programme but who do not wish to proceed to Stage 3 will be awarded a certificate of credit. Alternatively, a student may complete a further 30 credit negotiated study module and exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Research Enquiry at Doctoral level.

Stage 3 – The Thesis

A student registered for a Professional Doctorate will complete a doctoral thesis. It is expected that students will commence the thesis stage of their programme following notification that they have passed Stage 2 of their programme. Students will be allocated at least two supervisors to support the thesis phase of their programme. One of them will be identified as the lead or ‘Director of Studies’ (DoS) with the specific responsibility to supervise the student regularly and frequently and to ensure that they receive proper guidance and support.

The text of the thesis excluding ancillary data, must not normally exceed 50,000 words. The thesis will be examined by viva voce.
