About NCT
NCT has nearly 60 years’ experience in supporting parents, offering a range of antenatal and postnatal courses and workshops to support them through pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.  These courses are delivered by specially trained practitioners who understand what matters to new mums and dads.

Our Training
Our Birth and Beyond programme of courses is your route to supporting new and expectant parents in a range of rewarding roles, be that as an Antenatal Teacher, Postnatal Practitioner or Breastfeeding Counsellor. There are two levels of study on offer:

  1. Foundation Degree (levels 4 and 5) which allows you to work as an NCT Signature Antenatal Practitioner, or as a Breastfeeding Counsellor or Postnatal Practitioner. From here there are additional modules which you can study to add to the breadth of your skills allowing you to work for example, as a Yoga for Pregnancy or Baby Massage Practitioner.
  2. If you want to continue with your studies you can move onto a BA (Hons) Degree at level 6.

Partial fee waiver

The University of Worcester and NCT are delighted to be able to offer a partial fee waiver for 2017 / 2018. The partial fee waiver will be equivalent to a reduction of £2000 on full-time fees for those students unable to access Government student finance. This will be offered pro rata for part-time students.

Job opportunities
Our training is vocational and leads to a variety of flexible and rewarding roles, including: facilitating Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond courses for NCT and the NHS; leading antenatal classes or yoga for pregnancy classes; providing breastfeeding information and support as a Breastfeeding Counsellor; facilitating postnatal groups; and providing support for parents as a Doula.  With further training, it’s also possible to work as an NCT Assessor, Supervisor, Mentor or Tutor.

Flexible study

Our modular and flexible university accredited courses are designed to fit around your life, and you can choose full or part-time options.

Using a convenient mix of tutorial and home-based learning means that you can balance your busy family life while training for a career supporting parents in their First 1,000 Days.


Study locations

Tutorials are run at locations all over the country and study days are run regionally, allowing you to undertake the majority of your studies without travelling too far from home. The initial 2-day residential Introductory Workshop is held at the University of Worcester in September, but all other monthly tutorials and study days are held at different regional locations.

Entry requirements

One A Level (or equivalent) at Grade C or above. or an equivalent Level 3 qualification i.e. a BTEC or CACHE Diploma.

These qualifications do not have to be in a related subject.

Student Loans

You may be eligible for a Student Loan if you have not undertaken higher education in the past.  This can pay for tuition fees as well as maintenance costs, study materials etc.  Visit the direct.gov website for more information.

Funding Options

NCT and University of Worcester Grant
We are pleased to announce that NCT and the University of Worcester will be able to offer a non-repayable grant to students who are not eligible for a government student loan in 2017-18.  It will be equal to £2,000 for 120 credits (full time) which means fees payable will be £4,890.  For part-time study, it will be equal to £1,000 for 60 credits which means fees payable will be £2,612.

Career Development Loan
You may be eligible for a career development loan of £300 to £10,000. The Learning and Skills Council will pay the interest for the life of the course in many cases and the interest rates are competitive. Grant/Trust funds
There are a large number of grant giving bodies in the UK who help with funding of education for different sets of people. They are often interested in helping women or students from non-white ethnic groups or single parents. It is worth spending some time finding out what specific help you may be able to apply for.

The Turn2Us website has details of grant giving bodies and can also advise whether you may be able to claim any benefits while you study.

Access to Learning Fund
This is a non-refundable grant from the University of Worcester which can be from £100 to £3500. It is designed for people who may be mature students, be on low incomes or who have children although many others not on this list could also be eligible. Core Training

Foundation Degree Birth and Beyond

Foundation Degree Birth and Beyond

The Core Training is the Foundation Degree which consists of 5 Modules at Level 4.  All 5 modules will be taken by all students. At Level 5, there are a range of options to allow the student to specialise.

On completion of the Foundation Degree, the student becomes a Birth & Beyond Practitioner and is able to facilitate a range of NCT services to parents.

 

Level 4 Fees

  • Full time The fee for the Foundation Degree Birth and Beyond  will be £6890
  • Part time The fee for the Foundation Degree Birth and Beyond  will be £3612 for each 60 credit part time year

Advanced Training

Foundation Degree: Level 5 Module Information

To obtain the Foundation Degree Birth and Beyond, at the end of Level 5 you will need a total of 240 academic credits. 120 academic credits need to come from the Level 4 Core Training. 

Students can choose from a wide range of modules to complete their degree. They can study to become a Practitioner in any of the other specialism modules, or they can study any of the modules below to 'bolt-on' to their training.

The only mandatory module for the Foundation Degree is ‘Understanding and Using Research’.  Apart from that, students can choose from a wide range of modules to complete their degree: they can study to become a practitioner in any of the specialism pathways, or they can study any of the modules below to ‘bolt-on’ to their training.

This will allow students to develop their careers flexibly in a way that meets both personal interests and the demand in their local area.

Level 5 Modules as ‘Stand-alone’ Continuous Professional Development

Level 5 modules are available as ‘stand-alone’ modules to be studied by those with a special interest in the subject but with no desire to study the whole Foundation Degree.


Level 5 Modules

You can either study these modules full time over one year or part time up to four years in a variety of locations. These credits can be made up in a variety of ways by a different combination of modules. There are three main specialist pathways which account for 60 credits each, these are:

  • Antenatal (60 credits)
  • Breastfeeding Counselling (60 credits)
  • Postnatal (60 credits)

You can choose any two of the specialist pathways to make 120 credits, or you can choose to study one of these and then select from any of the other 'minor pathways' or other modules below, as long as you have studied 120 credits at Level 5 in total by the end of your course. Other modules:

  • Yoga Pathway (Antenatal and Mother and Baby) (30 or 45 credits)
  •  Doula Pathway (30 credits)
  • Baby Massage (15 credits)
  • Working with Health and Social Care Professionals (15 credits)
  • Understanding the Neo-natal Experience (15 credits)

 

Level 5 fees

The fee for completing 120 academic credits at Level 5 will be £6890 and pro rata for part-time modules.

Students will also be able to study the Level 6 Modules to ‘top-up’ the Foundation Degree to obtain an Honours Degree.

Level 6 fees

The fee for completing 120 academic credits at Level 6 is £6890. Or you can complete individual 30 credit modules at £1806 each.
