You will develops leadership and management skills (such as persuasive communication, the ability to think analytically, make logical decisions, interpret and use management information, manage complex projects and inspire people) to underpin a successful career in business.

This course is ideal preparation whether you aspire to start up your own business, work in high-growth organisations or apply for a graduate-entry position in a leadership or management role.  The course will capture employers’ attention and is taught by active entrepreneurs (including a feature on Dragon’s Den), start-up specialists and venture capitalists and by marketing specialists with extensive experience of organisational leadership and management.  The course also benefits from close collaboration with the Institute of Directors.

Optional placement year

You can choose to take a placement year and convert your degree to a 4-year sandwich degree with virtually all of our full-time Single Honours degrees in Business or Computing by taking a year in industry between your second and final years.

You will be able to apply to spend your placement year at an organisation of your choice, anywhere in the UK. Placement opportunities are available in all business sectors, including marketing, advertising, PR, HR, business management, finance, economics, programming and game design.

Teaching and Assessment

How will you be taught?

You will learn how to:

Explore the real-life application of learning via tutors with business experience, via work placement, and via contact with local, national and international businesses – in the past these have included Shell, Barclays Bank and the BBC.

There will be opportunities to take part in projects for clients, visits to businesses, live and computerised simulations, case studies and exhibitions alongside the usual lectures, workshops and seminars. You will develop a range of skills, which you can evidence on your CV and talk about at job interviews.

Teaching approach

Worcester is a place where you will be supported to reach your full potential as a self-directed learner ready to make an immediate impact in the world of work. Tutors are friendly, approachable and accessible and virtual resources enable you to work flexibly to suit your own learning preferences and busy lifestyle.

You will progressively build your knowledge and expertise across levels of study through modules which are delivered in different ways, perhaps through traditional lectures and seminars as well as e-lectures, workshops and simulations. In a typical week, you will have 12 hours of scheduled contact time, which you will supplement with one-to-one tutorial meetings and around 20 hours of guided independent study.

Assessment

There are a variety of assessment types – reports, presentations, projects, examinations – and sometimes you will even be able to choose an assessment style to suit you.

    Crowdfunding business idea

    Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or business venture by raising monetary contributions from a large number of people, the crowd. We use this practice in groups to develop start-up marketing campaigns and get the class to select on the best campaign, as highlighted in this Time Higher Education Magazine article.

  • Technique

    Flipped classroom

    The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model in which the typical lecture and homework elements of a course are reversed. Short video lectures are viewed by students at home before the class session, while in-class time is devoted to exercises, projects, or discussions. This helps ensure we are working on your business idea “on task” as much as possible.

  • Technique

    Local global businesses provide our case studies

    The case studies we use are businesses we know, in fact they are local to Worcestershire or our partner universities.

    These case studies all have video elements and written case studies, which support the way you learn about the business, the business theory and the practical steps that business has taken to grow and sustain itself.

    In fact you will probably meet the business owners during your stay with us. It’s that connected.

  • Technique

    Simventure - authentic business simulations

    SimVenture, the multi-award winning business simulation which makes a powerful difference in the learning experience. It allows us to engage with you the student with in a deeper, richer learning experience and develop lasting business, enterprise and entrepreneurial talent.

    The simulation game lets you run your own virtual company and learn about entrepreneurship & business in an authentic, engaging and sustainable way. Within the four key business areas (Organisation; Sales & Marketing; Finance; and Operations) any number of decisions can be made each month. The challenge is to generate enquiries, sales and orders and build a successful company.

  • Dr Scott Andrews

    Dr Scott Andrews

    Scott began his academic career in 1996 at the Business School of the Royal Agricultural University and subsequently became a tutor at Cardiff University and an Associate Lecturer on the MBA programme at the Open University. A keen international traveller, Scott has led over 120 international educational programmes in more than 40 different countries. Scott is research active and interested in leadership, strategy and management and the way that not for profit organisations adjust during seasons of growth.

    Dr Holly Andrews

    Holly Andrews has been a lecturer with Worcester Business School since 2009. As the employability champion for the business school, Holly runs the work placements scheme and manages the core undergraduate personal development modules.

  • Dr Mike Bagshaw

    Dr Mike Bagshaw

    Mike is an Organisational Psychologist and Management and Leadership Development professional with over 20 years of consultancy experience in the UK and abroad. He has worked with a wide range of organisations in both the private and public sector, helping them to overcome the more difficult people management, development and leadership issues.

    An experienced one-to-one coach and mentor working with people who represent the critical intellectual capital for the future. Mike is also an experienced conference speaker both in the UK and abroad. He is a member of the British Psychological Society.

  • Dr Rebecca Jones

    Dr Rebecca Jones

    Rebecca is an active researcher investigating the impact of workplace coaching. She is a certified coach and is actively engaged in providing coaching to professionals in industry.

    Rebecca has experience of teaching on a variety of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional courses and her particular teaching and research expertise lie in personality, training, coaching, performance management, feedback and leadership development.

  • Dr Pamella Murray-Hopkin

    Dr Pamella Murray-Hopkin

    I enjoy enhancing student and client performance using a combination of experiential, educational and psychological development methodologies. The University suits my philosophy of education in that students are robustly challenged whilst being carefully supported. I appreciate working collaboratively with peers and seniors in Worcester Business School, across the University and externally. There are many opportunities for me to inform my teaching practice through working in the local community and in a range of sectors.

  • Dr David Bozward

    Dr David Bozward

    David is a serial technology entrepreneur, educator, mentor and authority on international youth entrepreneurship and education with over 20 years entrepreneurial business experience. He uses this in inspiring students across numerous disciplines with thought provoking, insightful and instantly usable techniques. David stimulates students to understand the implementation of entrepreneurship forging together theory and practice into the learning outcome.

    Nigel Walton

    Nigel has had a long association with the Business School, combining his tutoring and consultancy with work for The Open University and other international organizations. He is responsible for the management and delivery of an enterprise programme, funded by the HE Funding Council, and aimed at Undergraduate students who aspire to running their own business on Graduation.

    He has also contributed to the University’s Enterprise Fellowship Scheme which supports high achieving Undergraduates to further develop their enterprise ideas. Nigel has completed a number of Innovation Voucher consultancies with SMEs on behalf of the University, and has broad experience of e-tutoring and supporting group activity remotely both with Worcester and the Open University.

How much will it cost?

Full-time tuition fees

UK and EU students

The standard tuition fee for full-time UK and EU students registering in 2017 will be £9,250.

The standard tuition fee for full-time international (non-EU) students registering in 2017 will be £11,700 per year.

Part-time tuition fees

UK and EU students

The standard tuition fees for part-time UK and EU students registering on this course in 2017 will be £1,156 per 15-credit module, £1,542 per 20 credit module and £2,313 per 30-credit module.

Additional costs

Every course has day-to-day costs for basic books, stationery, printing and photocopying.  The amounts vary between courses.

If you decide to take up the optional placement year accommodation and travel costs may be incurred dependent on location of placement. As placements are paid by the employer at minimum wage plus these costs can be covered by the student’s wage. During this year you will pay 10% of normal academic fees to the University. You are provided with a placement tutor, and have access to the advice of the full placement team, as well as all University student support and services.

There are also occasional trips which may require you to incur travel costs.

Accommodation

Finding the right accommodation is paramount to your university experience, and our welcoming student communities are great places to live and study.

We have over 1,000 rooms across our halls, 358 of which were new in 2009. We offer halls of residence to suit every budget and need, from our 'Traditional Hall' at £94 per week to the £153 per week 'En-suite Extra'.
