What makes an Integrated Masters in Plant Sciences at Worcester special?

Plants are crucial to a surprisingly large number of processes on our planet. They stand at the base of nearly every food chain, and are instrumental in the production of clothing, vaccines, pharmaceuticals, and even plastics. With an ever-increasing global population, and an increasingly unstable climate, plant sciences are more important now than ever before.

At Worcester you can explore how plants grow, develop, reproduce, evolve, fight off pests and diseases, and interact with and respond to their environment.

During the fourth (masters) year you will undertake a very research oriented programme which will take full advantage of the academic and commercial research expertise in Plant Science within the department.

Entry requirements

  • 96 UCAS Tariff points MUST include A level Biology and A level in another science, maths or statistics.
  • 104 UCAS Tariff points MUST include A level Biology.
  • Other qualifications will be taken into account when considering your application, typical BTEC entry would be DMM.

Year 4 modules are common to a range of Biological Science Integrated masters courses but each subject specialisation will be achieved by students varying their selection of topics from within menus of material within each module. For example, a Plant Science student will undertake an appropriate research project which will differ from the choices available to a Biochemist. Although there will be generic material, the individual skills delivered within the Applied and Commercial Research and Research Methods modules will also be tailored to deliver the individual needs of each Integrated Masters course.

Applied and Commercial Research is a unique aspect of our Integrated Masters programme compared with other institutions. It will offer students valuable insights into applied and commercial rather than just pure research. Most of this module will take advantage of current commercial and applied research expertise in our Charles Darwin Laboratories including the National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit.

Teaching and Assessment

How will you be taught?

You will learn how to:

  • Become an independent, life-long learner.
  • Understand and apply knowledge and concepts in Plant Science to enable continuing understanding of new techniques and discoveries in the subject area as well as appreciating novel uses for more traditional methods in Plant Science.           
  • Develop, design and carry out an independent piece of research and a research thesis/project that may be linked to a research group or commercial organisation.
  • Critically analyse new theories and conceptual issues in Plant Science.
  • Develop and apply approaches for problem solving; e.g. when constructing an effective research project or maximising the opportunity that your CV will be shortlisted
  • Undertake a very research oriented programme which will take full advantage of the academic and commercial research expertise within the department.

Teaching Approach:

  • A variety of teaching techniques is used, including lectures, practicals, discussion groups, seminars, tutorials, videos, on-line and interactive resources and directed study.
  • An emphasis on activities which allow you to develop practical and transferable skills to increase your employability.
  • Some double modules to allow suitable development of the subject and for the delivery of important subject-specific and transferable skills.
  • An extended induction to allow the development of the necessary study skills as and when you need to use them.
  • Two special, course-based weeks each year to support skills development and employability.
  • Regular Personal Academic Tutorials on a one-to one basis to guide and support your studies.
  • Development of Laboratory and Field-Based pure and applied research skills.

    Mahmut is Chair of Molecular Plant and Microbial Biology at the University of Worcester.

    In addition to being an active researcher Mahmut leads on a number of undergraduate modules.

    Lorraine is Head of Biological Sciences and has a range of interests, from the physiology and behaviour of large agricultural animals to the ecology of Bryophytes, the latter being one of her main research interests.

Careers

Where could it take you?

This course will prepare you for a number of different career paths, including nature conservation, wildlife warden, work for the public sector and environmental consultancies as well as progression to higher degrees such as PhD.

As a Plant Scientist at the University of Worcester, you will be able to develop a wide range of intellectual, practical and social skills that are much in demand by employers. These include primary research and critical evaluation skills, communications skills, both written and oral, and a range of technical and IT skills such as the use of DNA technology, IT-based vegetation analysis, data analysis, and applied statistics.

You will also learn how to gather environmental or physiological data in the laboratory and/or the field using logging equipment, controlled environment cabinets and a range of physiological monitoring devices.

Plant Scientists, who can solve problems, look at evidence and make measured and reasoned arguments, are not only required in scientific fields but also in other fields - such as the media, retailing and finance - to ensure there is a balanced view relating to new technology and that any risks are neither under nor over stated.

There is also a need for people to be able to explain these scientific arguments in 'lay-mans' terms, not only in teaching but also in a wide range of other vocations.

Worcester Plant Science graduates are working in Primary and Secondary Teaching, Forensic Science, the Police Force, the Fire Service, Scientific and Environmental Research, the Environment Agency, Ecological Consultancy, Banking, IT and the retail trade to name a few.

It is becoming increasing difficult for graduates to obtain PhD positions with only a BSc (Hons) degree. Graduates with an Integrated Masters degree would have significant additional research expertise that would enable them to progress straight to an MPhil/PhD position. There is an increasing need for graduates in the UK economy as skilled researchers for UK PLC. Such graduates have much to offer within the general area of applied biological research but also, critically, to drive forward the innovation that is vital for the UK economy.

How much will it cost?

Full-time tuition fees

UK and EU students

The standard tuition fee for full-time UK and EU students registering in 2017 will be £9,250.

Every course has day-to-day costs for basic books, stationery, printing and photocopying.  The amounts vary between courses.

You will also need a lab coat, which can be bought for around £13.

Accommodation
