Overview

This course is designed to give you the practical skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in the sports industry. From day one, you’ll work hands-on with people across a range of sports and abilities, building your expertise in coaching, physical activity, sports science and inclusive practice.

In your first year, you’ll cover the fundamentals of sports coaching, learning key coaching techniques and educational principles that form the foundation of effective coaching. During this year we’ll work closely with you to help you decide which direction you want to go in your career and with your degree. To support you in this journey, you'll be assigned a Personal Academic Tutor (this will be one of your lecturers) who will guide you throughout your studies.

In the second year you can choose to specialise, choosing modules that allow you to graduate with the following named degrees:

  • BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching (Disability)
  • BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching (Performance Analysis)
  • BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching

You also have the flexibility at this point to switch to our Physical Education or Physical Education and Sports Coaching programmes.

Whichever route you choose, you’ll be well-prepared to step into a successful career in the sports industry.

Placements

Throughout the course, you’ll engage in practical coaching activities, gaining valuable experience that prepares you for the realities of a career in the sports industry.

A 100-hour work placement in your third year lets you apply your skills in a real-world setting, where you’ll work with individuals and teams in sports clubs, schools or community programmes. Recent students have been involved in coaching placements with sports organisations like the Gloucestershire Rugby Foundation, West Bromwich Albion Academy, and the Worcester Wolves Wheelchair Basketball Club. These placements provide essential hands-on experience and help you build a professional network in the sports sector.
