Professionals seeking to explore applied techniques in sport physiology can select this module to enhance their professional development and to contribute 15 credits towards their award in professional development. The module is taught along side students and professionals in Applied Sport Physiology.
This module is part of the University’s Applied Sport Physiology MSc course. You will study alongside students on this course. The module is also part of the Professional Development MA/MSc course - a flexible course that you help design to take your career to the next level.
Overview
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
- Assess the determinants of performance using laboratory tests
- Justify choice of testing protocols with underpinning theory
- Competently follow set protocols with high levels of accuracy resulting in the collection of reliable and ethical data
- Evaluate and interpret resultant data utilising critical theoretical underpinning
- Communicate effectively to coaches and athletes in an appropriate scientific format
Indicative Content
- Assessment of anthropometric characteristics
- Collection of a capillary blood sample to assess haematological markers of performance
- Laboratory based testing to profile endurance performance including lactate threshold testing, running economy, and VO2 max
- Laboratory based testing to profile power performance
- Laboratory procedures to assess the health of our athletes, examples include ECG or heat tolerance
It is expected that all advertised modules will run, but there may be situations where there are insufficient students to make a particular module viable.

Module delivery
This module is delivered in taught face to face sessions weekly on campus.
Assessment
Assessment of this module includes a Practical report file where students will undertake a selection of discipline specific physiological laboratory protocols that would be used with an athlete. You will need to demonstrate your interpersonal skills and client care, alongside your ability to competently follow set protocols and safely administer testing procedures and techniques resulting in the collection of reliable and ethical data.
Entry Requirements
Entry to this module requires registration to a postgraduate award in Professional Development. The module is also available as a stand alone module, anyone wishing to take this module as a stand alone module should contact the admissions team.
No prior study is required for this module, but it is advisable to contact the module leader prior to selection of this module.
