Discussion and directed study tasks will be used to allow students to critically evaluate the likely impact of any interventions from and discuss their appropriateness to various athletic populations. Face to face teaching will focus on practical competencies and skills required to effectively train athletes.

Overview

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

  1. Critically appraise principles of performance enhancement through physical training
  2. Devise interventions to enhance performance through synthesis of appropriate literature and practical knowledge
  3. Demonstrate practical and emotional competency in various methods of training and performance enhancement.

Indicative Content

  1. Mechanisms of adaptation to physical training
  2. Periodisation and training structure
  3. Training the energy systems
  4. Skill acquisition
  5. Environmental considerations
  6. Recovery methods.

It is expected that all advertised modules will run, but there may be situations where there are insufficient students to make a particular module viable.

Module delivery

This module is delivered in taught face to face sessions weekly on campus.

Assessment

Assessment of the module includes a Presentation where students (for an athlete of their choice) will produce a series of interventions designed to enhance performance. Each intervention will be underpinned by a critique of the relevant scientific evidence and include an appreciation of the practical limitations of their chosen scenario.


Entry Requirements

Entry to this module requires registration to a postgraduate award in Professional Development. The module is also available as a stand alone module, anyone wishing to take this module as a stand alone module should contact the admissions team.

No prior study is required for this module, but it is advisable to contact the module leader prior to selection of this module.
