The module is specifically designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of healthcare professionals wishing to undertake the role of Professional Advocate and who are considered by their employer to be eligible to become Professional Advocates.

This module will enable nurses, midwives or other healthcare practitioners to fulfil the role of Professional Advocate and develop competence to deploy the elements of the Advocating for Education and Quality Improvement (A-EQUIP model).

This module is part of the University’s MSc Advanced Clinical Practice/ Advanced Clinical Practice Degree Apprenticeship . You will study alongside other students on these courses. The module is also part of the Professional Development MA/MSc course - a flexible course that you help design to take your career to the next level.


Overview

This module prepares practitioners to demonstrate understanding of the role of the Professional Advocate, providing support to enhance health and wellbeing; developing education and training to progress knowledge and skills; and leading personal action for quality improvement practices to ensure that the patient group and families experience safe, enriching care.

This module is only available to students who have been approved for selection and attendance with their employing organisation. Confirmation of source of funding for the module will need to be available on application.

It is expected that all advertised modules will run, but there may be situations where there are insufficient students to make a particular module viable.

This is a leadership in healthcare practice development module that optimises staff wellbeing and positive staff cultures in the workplace, promotes safety, supports service improvement and advocates for excellence in practice. The module is suitable for experienced healthcare staff who wish to extend their clinical role and utilise leadership skills.


Module delivery

The module is delivered via six asynchronous study days of six hours each. You will also undertake online directed study, work-based learning and guided independent study.

Assessment methods

  • Competency Portfolio
    (Students must have access to a qualified Professional Advocate Supervisor (Nurse or Midwife) to support completion of the competency portfolio.)
  • Presentation


Entry Requirements

  • You must be a registered Nurse, Midwife or Allied Health Professional
  • Hold a degree or HE diploma in a relevant subject

If you do not have a first degree the following criteria may be taken into consideration:

  • Evidence of successful academic study at level 6 or equivalent
  • Experience of working in a health setting, the roles undertaken and the level of decision making undertaken
  • Awareness of the demands of studying at postgraduate level
  • Interest and motivation for successful study on the course
  • Support from employer to undertake course
