The module focuses on the most important themes and challenges to the international management of sport, in particular the governance structure and function of sports bodies and the ‘trade-off’ value that sports events bring to the world stage. Emphasis will be placed on case study analysis of sporting organisations engaged in grass roots activity to those with a worldwide remit.
This module is part of the University’s International Sport Management MSc . You will study alongside other students on this course. The module is also part of the Professional Development MA/MSc course - a flexible course that you help design to take your career to the next level.

Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
- Critically evaluate examples of governance practice of sport organisations and the factors influencing their governance decisions
- Critically assess the influencing context for sporting organisations when determining their policy focus, initiatives and desired outcomes
- Appreciate the importance of good governance practice for all sporting organisations, in all sectors and at all levels of the sports spectrum – grass roots to international federations
- Critically examine the impacts – economic, environmental, socio-cultural – and legacy of sports events on societal stakeholders
- Forecast the impact of sports events at the global, national, regional, and local level
- Build objective and robust, evidence-based proposals for the selection and sanctioning of sports events
- Critically appraise the ‘value’ of sports events as an investment opportunity for governments and cities.

- Sport governance roles, responsibilities and organisational structures
- Influences on sport governance – regulatory environment, sport policy, globalisation
- Risks, compliance and conformance in sport governance
- Who owns sport?
- The strategic sport event planning process: bidding, control and evaluation
- The economic, environmental, social and cultural impact of sports and events
- Investigating sport event legacy
- Planning for an oral presentation
- Weekly case study analysis task
It is expected that all advertised modules will run, but there may be situations where there are insufficient students to make a particular module viable.

Module delivery
This module is delivered in taught face to face sessions in a block of learning activites that takes place in September and January. Followed by weekly on campus sessions.
Assessment
Assessment of this module includes a Portfolio (including presentation and discussion- to include peer assessment). The portfolio will examine theories, concepts and issues relating to the governance of sports bodies. It will crystalize the key drivers, impacts, ‘value’ and legacy of sport events to determine applied solutions to the challenges faced in managing sport internationally.
Entry Requirements
Entry to this module requires registration to a postgraduate award in Professional Development. The module is also available as a stand alone module, anyone wishing to take this module as a stand alone module should contact the admissions team.
No prior study is required for this module, but it is advisable to contact the module leader prior to selection of this module.
