This module explores organisational culture, multidisciplinary team working and how this relates to leadership in sport. It explores wider factors influencing leadership from the perspective of micro-politics and sociocultural conceptions of power. Theoretical models of leadership will be reviewed.

The module will span a wide range of disciplines in sport including coaching, management, science, performance analysis and (adapted) physical education. The module will enable students to consider how they are currently led and how their leaders’ approach effects them and others they work alongside. The module also invites students to reflect on their own current, and future, approaches to leadership.

Overview

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the factors influencing multidisciplinary team working and the culture of organisations in sport
  2. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of leadership theories relevant to sport
  3. Critically analyse the relative credibility of research conducted within sport concerning the leadership of individuals and/or teams of people
  4. Demonstrate a systematic and critical approach to creating original and creative practical applications to their current or future leadership practice.

Indicative Content

This module will operate through the medium of the Opportunities for Exploration model (PBL) or scenario-based learning. Students will form groups and will tackle problems constructed to concern contemporary issues in multidisciplinary team working and leadership within the sports literature.

Typical theoretical aspects of the problems will feature empowerment, autonomy-promoting approaches, organisational culture, enhancing collaborative evaluation, multidisciplinary team working, micro-politics, power, group dynamics, managing upwards and transactional, transformational and servant leadership.

It is expected that all advertised modules will run, but there may be situations where there are insufficient students to make a particular module viable.

Completing work for this module also provides an opportunity to demonstrate your professional understanding and capabilities in annual reviews, in seeking increments and promotions, or job interviews.


Module delivery

This module is delivered in taught face to face sessions in a block of learning activities that take place in September and January. Followed by weekly on campus sessions.

Assessment

Assessment of this module includes a Portfolio: through negotiation with the module tutor, students will design a bespoke format(s) of assessment to best demonstrate having met the learning outcomes for the module. For example, the students may choose to submit an essay-based portfolio by selecting a maximum of two of the principal theories underpinning a solution to a problem within the module and critically reviewing the sports literature utilising these theories. In addition, they might produce a solution to the sports scenario problem assigned during the module. A range of additional assessment items could be negotiated including blogs, reflections, mini case studies etc.


Entry Requirements

Entry to this module requires registration to a postgraduate award in Professional Development. The module is also available as a stand alone module, anyone wishing to take this module as a stand alone module should contact the admissions team.

No prior study is required for this module, but it is advisable to contact the module leader prior to selection of this module.
