Overview

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of learning theories and coaching pedagogies
  2. Evidence a comprehensive and critical understanding of learning theories and coaching pedagogies applicable to current research within the coaching field
  3. Demonstrate a systematic and critical approach to creating personal practical applications to their coaching practice

Indicative Content

  • Exploration of underpinning learning theory and contemporary coaching pedagogies
  • Critical analysis of the application of learning and pedagogic theory within the sports coaching literature
  • Practical exploration of applied sports pedagogy
  • Critical analysis of the impact of contemporary sports pedagogy on athlete and coach development

It is expected that all advertised modules will run, but there may be situations where there are insufficient students to make a particular module viable.

Sports Coaching modules prepare students for future employment and allow those who are already employed to further develop their professional practice. The development of employability skills and attributes is embedded throughout all elements of the modules.

Links with employers

Modules within the Masters Programme have been written by academics currently members of and engaged with an array of professional bodies and employers within their pathway disciplines including the Football Association, Sports Coach UK, England Hockey, British Gymnastics, the British Equestrian Federation, Worcestershire County Cricket Club, British Rowing, Cheltenham College, British Cycling and Worcester Warriors Rugby Football Club.


Module delivery

Assessment

  • Presentation: 20 mins (30%)
  • Portfolio: 4,000 words (70%)

Through negotiation with the module tutor, students will design a bespoke format(s) of assessment to best demonstrate having met the learning outcomes for the module. For example, the students may choose to review a small range of learning and pedagogic theories and how these are applied within the sports coaching literature through a variety of mechanisms such as essays, interviews, blogs and reflections.


Entry Requirements

Entry to this module requires registration to a postgraduate award in Professional Development. The module is also available as a stand alone module, anyone wishing to take this module as a stand alone module should contact the admissions team.

No prior study is required for this module, but it is advisable to contact the module leader prior to selection of this module.
