Overview

The main objective of this module is to provide an understanding of financial management to enable managers to make informed financial decisions.

The module provides critical discussion and analysis of the key financial choices faced by management within a variety of organisations both domestic and international.

The module covers areas such as the choice regarding financing the business – both the costs and risks involved; shareholder value – how to measure and manage this; critical analysis of financial performance and the complex decisions regarding business restructuring.

Real world examples and data are used to demonstrate the practical application of the concepts and methods studied.

The module is taught via weekly, 2-hour sessions. Please contact wbs@worc.ac.uk to confirm times and dates for the next delivery of this module.

It is expected that all advertised modules will run, but there may be situations where there are insufficient students to make a particular module viable.

The module provides critical discussion and analysis of the key financial choices faced by management within a variety of organisations both domestic and international.

This module will enable students to develop and enhance vital skills which are highly sought after by employers such as: research skills, problem solving and critical thinking and analytical skills.


Module delivery

Typical sessions will contain a mixture of lectures and practical exercises that engage the class in active learning.

Students will engage in small group or independent activities such as financial calculations, discussion of company performance, discussion of financial concepts, critical reviews of papers, the results of which will be presented back to the whole group. These activities will develop critical understanding of the theories and their application.

Preparatory reading and review of learning material on a weekly basis will be necessary to ensure students can effectively participate in and complete this module.

The University VLE will be used to support students through the publishing of lecture notes and links to other relevant resources.

Assessment methods

This module is assessed by:

  • Exam (using a seen case study), 2.5 hours


Entry Requirements

Admission to this modules typically requires:

  • A second class honours degree in any subject (or International students holding a qualification recognised as equivalent by the University).

Students whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate proficiency to a minimum level of 6.5 IELTS (and minimum of 5.5 in each element) or equivalent
