Overview
Operations management is concerned with creating products and services and delivering value to customers.
Managing the value chain is critical to the success of all types of organisations. Globalisation increasingly demands organisations to operate internationally and to continuously improve their value proposition to their customers.
This module aims to evaluate the vital role operations management plays in contemporary organisations and its contribution to enhancing their competitive advantage.
As cross-functional team working is vital for successful operations management, students are required to work together to carry out a critical analysis of real-life cases, identify issues relevant to the management of the operations and the value creation process before proposing improvement recommendations.
Specific exposure to the business context will be provided through links to live case studies to enable students to gain an appreciation of this subject in its application.

Managing the value chain is critical to the success of all types of organisations. This module will enable students to develop and enhance vital skills which are highly sought after by employers such as: problem solving and critical thinking and consultancy skills.
Module delivery
The module adopts pedagogic approaches that require individual interaction with a range of contemporary research driven material to develop subject knowledge and critical thinking.
Typical sessions will contain a mixture of lectures and practical exercises that engage the class in active learning.
Students will engage in small group or independent activities such as case study analysis, discussion and critical reviews of research papers, the results of which will be presented back to the whole group. These activities will develop critical understanding of the theories and their application.
Students will use the university VLE for access to materials and will engage extensively with online contemporary texts and articles.
Assessment methods
This module is assessed by:
- 30-minutes Group Presentation based on group research project
- 1,250 Individual Consultancy Report.
Entry Requirements
Admission to this modules typically requires:
- A second class honours degree in any subject (or International students holding a qualification recognised as equivalent by the University).
Students whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate proficiency to a minimum level of 6.5 IELTS (and minimum of 5.5 in each element) or equivalent
