The module fulfils three roles: it enables students to, firstly, look critically at their role as an analyst within wider sporting environments; secondly, appraise theoretical perspectives that are fundamental to working with others in sport; and thirdly, to reflect upon the application of the studied theory in guiding and improving the student’s practice.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

  1. Critically appraise the performance analysis processes when working within a sporting environment
  2. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the factors influencing the role of the analyst working in a sporting environment
  3. Critically analyse theories relevant to leading, managing and working with individuals and teams as a performance analyst
  4. Demonstrate a systematic and critical approach to creating original and creative practical applications to their current or future performance analysis practice

It is expected that all advertised modules will run, but there may be situations where there are insufficient students to make a particular module viable.

Completing work for this module also provides an opportunity to demonstrate your professional understanding and capabilities in annual reviews, in seeking increments and promotions, or job interviews.


Module delivery

This module is delivered in taught face to face sessions in a block of learning activities that take place in September. Followed by weekly online sessions.

Assessment

Assessment of this module includes a Portfolio. The role of the analyst: challenges, solutions and learning required to ensure effective delivery. The final critical appraisal should knit together the Summative Assessment Required Appendices (or ‘patches’) (SARA) and students should explain how they meet the learning outcomes of the module. Students should place the SARA’s at the end of the portfolio as an appendix and make direct reference to these.

A suggested format for the SARA’s could include the following:

  • A written critical analyses of a series of performance analysis and coaching process models discussing whether performance analysis is a coaching tool or a discipline of sports science.
  • A recorded presentation discussing the challenges that an analyst has or may have faced when entering a new environment.
  • An infographic outlining how relationships and trust can be built with coaches, players or other members of support staff.


Entry Requirements

Entry to this module requires registration to a postgraduate award in Professional Development. The module is also available as a stand alone module, anyone wishing to take this module as a stand alone module should contact the admissions team.

No prior study is required for this module, but it is advisable to contact the module leader prior to selection of this module.
