Dr Alice Kinghorn is a historian of religion and empire, with a particular interest in the physical legacies of empire in English churches. Currently, she is researching and producing a monograph based on her PhD research which examines the Church of England’s involvement in African chattel enslavement.
Her doctorate was funded by the University of Bristol, and she has since worked as a researcher and consultant within the Church of England and its dioceses. She has previously taught at the University of Gloucestershire and the University of Bristol.

Alice is an Associate Fellow of Advance HE.
Research Interests
Alice’s PhD research examined the Church of England’s involvement in African chattel enslavement, and she is currently preparing a monograph based on this research. She has primarily written on the work of Anglican missionaries in the early nineteenth century, as well as on the experiences of enslaved people in the Caribbean. She is currently researching the social and cultural histories of parish church fabric, based on her previous research into ‘contested heritage’. She has previously researched church buildings in Bristol as PI on a policy-funded project.
Alice is interested in the repercussions of this research and has worked closely with the Church of England and its dioceses on ‘contested heritage’ projects. She has undertaken research into institutional involvement in African chattel enslavement.
Alice engages with public history and has recently researched and appeared on a documentary for S4C. She regularly delivers talks to parish churches.
