How does it work?
Each subject is made up of modules, some lasting a whole academic year and other modules lasting half a year. Therefore, you get the right balance of core knowledge and skills, and scope to follow your interests. In Year 1, you study your two subjects in equal weighting. In year 2, you can opt to:
- Continue studying your subjects in equal weighting - a Joint Honours degree
- Specialise more in one subject and take the other as a minor - a Major/Minor Honours Degree
- Focus entirely on one subject - Single Honours degree, provided the subject is offered as a Single Honours Degree.
Your academic tutor will help you plan your studies, review your progress and choose your modules.
Opt at the end of Year 1 to a Single Honours Degree:

Students who opt at the end of Year 1 to switch to Single Honours will have taken the same first year core modules as other Single Honours students, so will have the essential knowledge and core skills for studying the subject, even if it is new to them on entry of the course. In Year 2, Single Honours students can, therefore, take all their modules from one subject if preferred.
In Year 3, Single Honours students are usually required to take an independent study or project module.
