Welcome to our ICE conference

We look forward to welcoming Research students to present at our FREE two-day event held, in person, at the Severn Campus of the University of Worcester. 

Under the theme of ICE – IGNITE.CONNECT.ENGAGE - the conference aims to bring together postgraduate researchers from all disciplines, stages of research, and backgrounds. This is a great opportunity for all postgraduate research students to present and discuss your research in front of a supportive audience and to develop and enhance your skills in sharing your work. 

We invite postgraduate research students from all disciplines to submit an abstract for a range of presentation formats. 

"The PGR conference gave me the opportunity to think about my research, to plan, to write, and of course present. While I knew that what I would be presenting something that is far from being complete, I also knew that I would have a supportive audience. The feedback and questions at the end were extremely useful. I also learnt a lot from the keynote speakers and just generally found the whole experience uplifting. 'Impostor syndrome: friend or foe in doctoral studies (and beyond)' 

Professor of of Sociology of Sport and Exercise Győző Molnár

Taking on a new challenge and beginning a new chapter in life normally generates a range of emotions and experiences. Consequently, I was not particularly shocked at the outset of my doctoral studies to be informed that I was embarking on a significant undertaking that was akin to a three-year-plus rollercoaster ride. I was warned that the experience would come with numerous emotional as well as intellectual fluctuations and frustrations that would span across a broad spectrum. Regardless of some sensible advice and cautionary tales, in retrospect, I was ill-prepared for some of the challenges that rolled across the path leading towards the completion of my doctoral studies. In particular, in this presentation, I will focus on some aspects of impostor syndrome which may manifest during doctoral studies and how we may think about acknowledging and managing symptoms such as self-doubt and fear of failure.

Available Streams

Presentations

Presentations should be 15 minutes with up to 15 minutes for questions. Abstracts should be a maximum of 200 words and should include: context/aims of the research, methodology/approach, findings, and implications (research/practice as applicable).

Ignite Presentations

For early stage PGRs, an opportunity to share your thinking to date, or a work in progress. If you are pre-data collection or at the design stage of your research and would like to present your work for early feedback, this could be the option for you. Abstracts for Ignite Presentations should be a maximum of 200 words and include the context/aims of your project and a brief insight into the intended purposes of your presentation. Each presenter will be given 5 minutes to present an aspect of their research, with 10 minutes for questions.

Travel and Venue Details

This year we will be holding the conference at the university's Severn Campus in Worcester, which spreads over three buildings set along side the iconic River Severn. Most of the event, including registration for both days, will take place in the Joel Richards Suite of the Arena, with conference streams taking place in the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Riverside Buildings.

We are not able to offer university accommodation this year, however there are numerous options for accommodation in Worcester.  You may find the following list of hotels useful for finding accommodation, with many more in the City and surrounding area:
