Thursday, 21 February 2019
A host of events for schools and the community will be on offer at The Hive in celebration of British Science Week.
The University of Worcester and The Hive are working in collaboration with the Royal Institution to put on a series of science themed sessions between March 8th and March 17th.
Anne Hannaford, Director of Arts and Culture at the University, said: “We are very excited that the Royal Institution and the Royal Meteorological Society will be joining us as part of British Science Week this year, with some fun and interactive sessions planned around science. We are always keen to involve the community and inspire young people and we hope these events will spark people’s curiosity and interest in science.”
On March 12th there will be a family science show, Bringing Science to Life, which will give children and adults the chance to get hands-on with surprising experiments and shocking science facts. The event also includes a whistle-stop tour of some of the great scientific discoveries made at the Royal Institution. Also that day, youngsters can learn how to make rain, tornadoes or clouds or power a rocket in a Laboratory in the Library session.
The Royal Institution will also be giving practical tips to science teachers on how to engage their pupils with complex subject matter. The Science for Teachers: Continuing Professional Development session, on March 11th, will involve fun demonstrations and practical activities for teachers to use in the classroom.
As part of the week, experts from the University will be delivering free public talks. Dr John Dutton, Lecturer in Ecology, will be explaining how science informs wildlife management on March 13th and Dr Duncan Westbury, Lecturer in Ecology and Environmental Management, will detail the latest ecological research on March 14th.
The University and Royal Institution will also be running several days of science-based activities with local schools, involving over 1,000 children.
A free BBC Focus Science Discovery Trail along with an Exhibition of Weather Photography from the Royal Metrological Society, capturing extremes of weather from around the world, will be available in The Hive, from March 1st to March 31st.
