These sessions, which should be booked by lecturers, are tailored to the academic English needs of students on specific courses. The content is determined in liaison with lecturers and is suitable for both home and international students.
The sessions are delivered within the course timetable, either as a block or on a one-off basis. Lecturers can book sessions before a course starts, or during the year when specific needs arise. Booking early is recommended as these sessions are popular.
Typical content
As the sessions are course-specific, there is no standard scheme of work. As a guide, they cover
- approaching assignments with criticality
- writing coherently and cohesively in an appropriate academic style
- using references to support arguments
- summarising, paraphrasing and synthesising
- using writing strategies, such as drafting, proofreading and editing
- preparing for and delivering academic presentations
"Thanks again for today's session. It was really supportive of the different levels of understanding about literature reviews. One of my students commented that she had drafted hers and this helped her think about how to make sure it all 'glued' together. Others who have yet to get started commented that it was a reminder of how to get searching and new ideas to write paragraphs properly."

"This is my last email sent to you as a student. I just want to let you know that I have passed the last assignment that you helped me with and yesterday I received my pin and officially I am a registered nurse. I just want to say: ' Thank you! for your guidance, for encouragement, for being there when I needed it the most, and importantly, for being a part of my journey. I could not have done it without your help'. Many thanks and appreciation."
