Young People Descend on Worcester for Return of Popular Basketball Camp
Thursday, 08 September 2022
Young people from across the UK and Spain came together at the University of Worcester for a special basketball camp.
This was the first Worcester Valencia Basketball Camp since the pandemic and had the highest attendance in the Camp’s five year history with 87 young people taking part. This year, London-based charity Greenhouse Sports also joined the Camp for the first time.
The University has been working with Greenhouse Sports for a number of years, to open opportunities for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Camp is run as a partnership between Worcester Wolves and Valencia Basket, delivering a unique summer residential experience for talented and aspiring young players.
The coaching team includes the senior coaching staff and players from the Worcester Wolves and senior coaches from Valencia Basket of the ACB league.
Participants took part in daily skill stations, drills, individual workouts and analysis, competitions and a minimum of two games per day.
Dean Blake, Worcester Valencia Camp Director, said: “It was fantastic to welcome young people to the University of Worcester Arena for the return of our ever popular Worcester Valencia Basketball Camp. We were particularly delighted to welcome a large group from Greenhouse Sports this year.
“It was a fantastic week with lots of talent. There were many opportunities for the participants to hone their skills, as well as for our own coaches to develop their coaching.
“It’s always great working with the coaching staff from Valencia and including the staff and coaches from Greenhouse has been excellent too. The Camp serves to strengthen our partnerships but more importantly provide more opportunities to young people.”
Juanjo Rojo, International activities chief at Valencia Basket, said: "The 5th edition of the Worcester-Valencia Basket Summer Camp has finished for another year with great success in participation and results. For one week the boys and girls have been able to enjoy specific basketball sessions as well as exchange experiences from their respective origins. Once again, it has been an honour to be part of a Camp that is already a benchmark in the sport.”
