Casey Stanley has received the Carol Pugh prize from the Worcester Association of Women Graduates (WAWG), one of the regions of the British Federation of Women Graduates (BFWG).

This recognised the 19-year-old second year student's achievements so far in her HND Computing degree, for which she also received an Academic Scholarship from the University.

Carol Pugh was a President of BFWG Worcestershire and the prize in her name is presented to the University of Worcester's female undergraduate who achieves the highest grades in their first year of Computing or Mathematics-related studies. The BFWG aims to be the voice of women graduates in England and Wales, promoting the necessity of education.

Receiving the £200 prize, Casey, of Worcester, said: "It feels incredible to actually achieve something like this. I would never would have imagined that I would receive two awards.

"I think the premise of this award is to help improve the lives of women in education and life. It encourages first year female students to strive to achieve, as all women should do."

Sue Powell, from BFWG Worcestershire, who presented the award, said: "We support this idea of encouraging women into the Computing industry. This is a gesture to praise a woman who has obtained good results and hopefully encourage others as well."

Chris Bowers, Head of Computing at the University of Worcester, added: "This is an award which recognises the outstanding work of a female student achieving the very highest levels of academic success.

"At a time when the number of women enrolling in higher education courses is increasing, the under representation of women studying Computing continues to be a significant global challenge. The encouragement that the Carol Pugh award provides to women studying Computing here at Worcester is hugely important and we are very proud of our association with the Worcester Association of Women Graduates."
