Top Lawyer Delivers Talk on AI

The Master of the Rolls, one of the most senior legal professionals in the UK, has spoken about AI and the law at the University of Worcester.

Sir Geoffrey Vos’ talk was attended by staff and students at the University, as well as several legal professionals and students from a local high school.
Sir Geoffrey spoke on a range of topics, focussing on the future of the legal profession and the implications of the growing power of artificial intelligence.
As Master of the Rolls, Sir Geoffrey is a senior judge in England and Wales and is responsible for overseeing the civil division of the Court of Appeal, while managing court records and civil justice administration.
During his visit, he also took questions from the audience on the impact of AI on all elements of the law, from the way the county courts will work in the future to the way the law students at Worcester will work with artificial intelligence during their careers.
Sir Geoffrey also took time after giving his talk to speak to students at the University of Worcester personally.
It comes as the University of Worcester is due to welcome its first cohort of students on its Artificial Intelligence BSc (Hons) course in September next year, training people to understand the power of AI and the impact it will have on society.
Katie Costis, third year Law student at the University of Worcester and Department Representative for the School of Law, attended the event, and said: “It means a lot to us to have someone as distinguished as Sir Geoffrey Vos come to the University to speak with us.”
She continued: “Not just to hear his very interesting talk, but also to speak to him in person and receive advice from him and hear his experiences has been really great.”
Professor David Green CBE DL, Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Worcester, said: “It has been an honour to host Sir Geoffrey Vos, and a privilege for all of us, staff and students, to hear him speak and pose questions directly to him.”
He added: “The subject of AI is one which is impacting all areas of life and will continue to do so, and to hear Sir Geoffrey talk on the matter as it relates to law has been a real privilege for not just the staff and students at the University’s School of Law, but also the wider legal profession in Worcester.”
