A University of Worcester project has been shortlisted for a prestigious environmental award.
The University’s online sustainability magazine ‘Sus Things Out’ was named as a finalist in the Digital Futures category for this year’s Green Gown Awards.
The blog was started 10 years ago by students, lecturers, and expert practitioners to share stories about how University of Worcester students and other contributors work to combat climate change and its impacts.
Sus Things Out showcases internal and external events, student-led projects, talks, and conferences on campus as well as in the wider community.
Professor David Green, CBE DL, is the Chief Executive and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Worcester. He said: “We are delighted that our work on sustainability has once again been recognised, especially by the Green Gown awards which are considered the OSCARS for Higher Education sustainability.”
He continued: “The Sus Things Out website enables our students to showcase the work they’ve been doing to improve the environment for everybody and inspire people into action.”
Professor Green added: “Global heating and the resulting extreme weather as well as severe water and air pollution, habitat degradation and loss are urgent questions of our time. I am proud of the excellent work being done by students and colleagues at the University to provide practical solutions and positive measures to tackle the environmental crisis.”
The University has won and been shortlisted for numerous environmental awards over the last 20 years, including Sustainability Institution of the Year in 2019. Its most recent accolade was to be named by Autotrader Magazine as the most Electric Vehicle friendly University or College in the UK!
The Green Gown Awards have been running for two decades and recognise exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges.
Katy Boom is the Director of Sustainability at the University of Worcester and was the founder of Sus Things Out magazine. She said: “I am thrilled to see the online resources we have created with our staff and students being celebrated with a nomination by the Green Gown Awards.”
She continued: “Sus Things Out was created to help people understand what they can do to improve the world around us while drawing attention to the challenges we all face with sustainability and the environment, and it’s wonderful to see the collective efforts of the whole University community recognised by being nominated for such a prestigious award.”
