A team from the University of Worcester was crowned victors of the British Universities Wheelchair Basketball Championships this weekend.
The University of Worcester Arena, home of British Wheelchair Basketball, hosted the tournament with a record entry of 16 teams that included a Scottish Universities combined team.
The University of Worcester was the only institution to field two teams, reflecting the growth of the sport in Worcester.
On Saturday, March 5, the teams competed within four groups in a play-off league format. The following day both the University of Worcester 1st and 2nd teams played in the quarter final stages of the trophy competition and both teams secured places in the semi-finals.
Worcester's 2nd team was comfortably beaten by the Scottish Universities combined team 25-12 whilst the 1st team overcame a 10 point deficit to beat pre-tournament favourites, University of East London, by 25 -23.
The University 2nds then lost narrowly to University of East London in the bronze medal game by a margin on 25 " 23. The final game of the Championships saw the University of Worcester 1st team defeat Scottish Universities Combined 34 " 24 in front of a large crowd.
Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of Institute of Sport and Exercise Science, Mick Donovan, said: "Whilst it was great to see the University of Worcester crowned champions, I think the biggest success must be the record-breaking 16 teams that entered with 180 students taking part over an actioned packed weekend. A special mention has to go to British Wheelchair Basketball who looked after the teams and hosted a memorable event."
