Worcester Teaching Graduate set to Inspire Future Business Leaders

UW Bonnie Siviter

Redditch woman Bonnie Siviter will graduate from the University of Worcester this week, having finished her training to teach Business Studies at secondary school.

She said: “I’ve worked in marketing in London, and in the third sector as well, working within charities for their corporate fundraising teams, so I’ve done a few different roles and my career’s evolved with my family.”

Bonnie began her journey to becoming a fully qualified teacher when she got a job as a teaching assistant at a school near her home.

“I loved the secondary school life,” said Bonnie. “I loved working with the kids, and I think for me, the natural progression was to do the PGCE in Business, because that’s what my degree was.”

She added: “The whole learning journey was brilliant, from the start where you’re in school, and when you’re back at university doing the lectures, building up your knowledge on business and then going into schools and doing placements as well, it felt like it just flowed really nicely.”

As Bonnie was returning to education as a mature student, she had to make sure her studies would work around her family life and other commitments.

She said: “I told the university it would be really great if I could do my placements locally, and they took on board what I said, and they offered me a placement near my hometown and that was absolutely perfect for me.”

Bonnie enters the teaching profession with a wealth of experience to pass on to her pupils, and she said they always enjoy hearing about her life in the world of business working with some of the most easily recognisable brands in the world.

“Getting a feel for the role as a teaching assistant really inspired me,” said Bonnie. “Every single lesson that I teach, there’s something I talk about that I will have done in business, or a brand that I’ve worked on, a meeting I had which is relevant, and the students can see that they’re learning from it because there are jobs out there for them.”

If hearing how Bonnie has turned her passion into a new career, working with children and inspiring them, has inspired you, then you can find out more about pathways into teaching on the University of Worcester website.
