I graduated from the University of Birmingham Medical School before becoming a general practitioner (GP) in rural East Yorkshire. I developed a portfolio career as a GP, including working in hospital-based rheumatology and writing and delivering a mini-curriculum for medical students.
The development of a new and local medical school provided me with opportunities in academic medical education, initially as a Director of Clinical Studies and then as Director of Problem-based Learning (PBL). While working at the newly founded medical school, I was happy to become involved in all of the school’s curriculum components, operation and development.
I have delivered papers and materials and set-up PBL courses in Europe, North America, South America and China.
I have supervised Academic Foundation Year 2 doctors who are pursuing academic careers in medical education.
Qualifications
- MB. ChB
- PGCRT
- M. Phil (medical education).
Teaching Interests
In my specific roles, my areas of interest focus on learning rather than on teaching, followed by the practical use of knowledge and skills in real-life clinical practice.
It is my experience that the vast majority of students both value and enjoy Problem-based Learning.
It is as important to say that tutors, who have previously enjoyed teaching, soon become enthusiastic about the role of ‘facilitators of learning’.
Research Interests
My research thesis was:
Problem Based Learning at a new United Kingdom medical school: an investigation using
grounded theory
This investigated the attributes of one highly developed implementation of PBL.
