Gerard Doyle has worked in early years and primary education for almost twenty years. Gerard’s experience includes a variety roles in language and primary education: he has worked in the Irish-language schools sector in Northern Ireland and as an English-language teacher in Spain. Gerard has specialised in early years aspects of primary provision with a particular focus on English as an Additional language provision in English primary schools.
In 2011 Gerard began working in Higher Education lecturing in education and postgraduate initial teacher education. Recently he has developed teacher apprenticeship programmes in the West Midlands and Cambridgeshire as part of his leadership role in school-based teacher training.
Gerard joined the University of Worcester in January 2020 as a senior lecturer in primary education focusing on primary science and, design and technology. Gerard is subject lead for English as an Additional Language pedagogy in the primary department and is undertaking doctoral research for developing EAL pedagogical knowledge with student teachers.

Teaching and Research
Teaching Interests
Gerard specialises in pedagogical content knowledge development for English as an Additional Language with student teachers, which is complemented by his doctoral research work. He has particular interest in reflective practice and theories of professional development. Gerard’s subject specialisms are in science and, design and technology. He has designed an app that supports the teaching of DT: Cooking and Nutrition in primary classrooms.
