Theresa is a part-time PhD student studying Human Biology in the School of Science and the Environment at the University of Worcester.

Her PhD team is comprised of Dr Allain Bueno, Dr Emma Edwards and Dr Mathieu Di Miceli.

Theresa’s research will focus on determining whether non-invasive and inexpensive methods used in detecting Cardiovascular Disease (a Pro-Inflammatory disease) can be applied as early indicators for other Pro-Inflammatory diseases such as Metabolic Disease, Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, and Fatty Liver Disease.

Prior to her PhD studies here at the university, Theresa completed her BSc (Hons) degree in Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Connecticut (USA) as well as a MSc (Hons) in Applied Genomics at the University of Connecticut (USA) researching differentiation pathways and the genes that are involved in osteogenesis of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Theresa had previously attempted PhD studies at the University of Oxford in 2007 in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics studying under Prof. Zoltan Molnar with the intent of characterizing the subplate neurons of the developing mammalian cortex via selective gene silencing using mouse models and cre-loxP vector system. She withdrew from her doctoral studies due to personal circumstances.

During her graduate studies at the University of Connecticut, Theresa was a Student Teaching Assistant for Introduction to Biology Laboratory Component and Human Genetics to undergraduate students.

Theresa has also spent time working in industry for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Groton, CT in their Genetically Modified Models Group, as well as for small biotechnology companies in the Philadelphia, PA area working in vaccine development and therapeutic drug delivery systems. Her last role was working as a Research Assistant in Prof. Sten Eirik Jacobsen’s laboratory at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine.

Theresa has an interest in human physiology, nutrition, and disease.

Outside of her research and academic life, Theresa is passionate about healthy and sustainable living, growing her own food, dance, and analogue photography.
