Sport and dementia
As part of the new collaboration between Association for Dementia Studies and the School of Sport & Exercise Science, we are developing expertise in sport and dementia.
Our aim is to make a substantial contribution to building evidence-based practical ways of working with people living with dementia and their families using sport.
Two recent PhD studentships engaged in research that will enable people to live well with dementia, with both students successfully being awarded their PhDs.
- Chris Russell’s research explored identity and social engagement within the sports, leisure and dementia context. Outcomes were intended to improve sporting and leisure services and offer innovation to enhance care pathways.
- Becky Oatley’s research explored dementia and sporting reminiscence, memory and nostalgia. The study developed understanding of how reminiscence can improve community engagement for people living with dementia.
The PhDs have helped to feed into and develop an online course to Champion Physical Activity for People Affected by Dementia and a flyer is available.
