Children's University

Children’s University is a charity that works in partnership with schools to raise aspirations and confidence in children. Inclusive of children aged 5 – 14, it is an award scheme that encourages and celebrates participation in extra-curricular activities in and out of the classroom. Each year, over 4 million hours of learning are recorded through Children’s University.

How does it work?

With their own Passport to Learning, children receive credits from a vast range of learning opportunities. These can include after-school clubs, museums, theatres, libraries – almost anywhere that children can learn and develop skills.

Children can keep a track of their progress online, see their skills develop and reward themselves with certificates along the way. Every hour of participation takes them one step closer to their next certificate.

The time they spend learning is celebrated through an award system:

Bronze = 30 hours
Silver = 65 hours
Gold = 100 hours

Continuing right up to 1,000 hours!

Children attend their own graduation ceremonies, where they get to celebrate all their hard work with their family and friends!

What are the benefits of Children’s University?

Participation in extracurricular activities has a positive influence on achievement; increases a pupil’s positive identification with school; builds self-confidence and resilience and closes attainment gaps between children from the most disadvantaged backgrounds and more affluent peers.

Every child will develop life-long skills through fun and aspirational learning, empowering them to make positive choices about their future.

For schools, there are so many reasons to get involved in Children’s University. Focusing on activities beyond the classroom fits right in with Ofsted’s agenda on character development. Children’s University Online can be beneficial in supporting your school with skills development and reporting against Gatsby Benchmarks.
